I got this '91 Town Car a couple months ago. It wasn't driven much by the previous owner. Anyhow, stopped to fuel up today, and when I went to start the car back up the engine wouldn't crank over. Asked one of the mechanics in the garage if they'd help me out. He tested the battery, it was fine. Jumped my car and said I need a new alternator.
What I want to know is will an alternator from a '94 Crown Victoria work in my car?

Here's a thought - go to your favorite Auto Parts website (O'Reilly, PepBoys, AutoZone) and check.
The short answer is YES, the trailing (2nd) part number for either part for either car is the same. The Panther Platform for both vehicles came with the 4.6L EFI V8; many of the parts are interchangeable.

An alternator from a civilian '94 Crown Vic will work although there are two types used for those years, a "small case" and a "large case". One from a Police Interceptor (VIN P71) will NOT work without modifying the wiring harness.

And if you plan on adding a 1000w stereo, you'll be wanting the 'P' Code Alternator and all it's 190 or more AMP's of power; just as a Police Vehicle would need.

Which would require said wiring harness upgrade.
You can even upgrade to a 6G alternator but you will have to make a custom top mounting bracket. And this is required, unlike on the 98+ model years where this bracket is only crash bracket.
