'96 Steering Rack Replacement: What's Involved?

I've got a steering rack with a leak by one of the inner tie-rod boots. What's involved in replacing the rack? It looks to me like you undo the lines, disconnect the outer tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles, take the steering shaft loose. and drop the four (4) big bolts that hold the rack to the cross member. It looks like it could then be pulled out to the side through a wheel opening. The only things that puzzle me is what is that device that sits on the crossmember below the rack, under the driver's side end of the rack where the rack bolts to the crossmember. -- WT

Looking closer, I find it hard to see the steering shaft at all, much less how to get the two apart. :-o Time to consult a manual I think.
