Transfer case viscous coupler

I have purchase a 95 RR County LWB 4.2 ltr. The sellers mechanic told her that the vehicle might need a new transfer case viscous coupler. He reportd that there was intermitent "binding". Is there a sure fire way to confirm this. Obviously, I don't want to spend $1200 for a new one installed if it is not needed.
