1998 Venture, 150,000 miles. Been getting this code on and off again for several weeks. The van runs great other than an occasional hesitation from a stop and sometimes it stalls starting from a stop sign, especially if you sit at a stop light idling for some time. (The hesitation and stalling seems to have started when the code started lighting) Highway performance is great as usual and gas mileage is not suffering. I've inspected the wiring to the sensor and it all looks fine. Haven't pulled the sensor yet as I know I have to move the power steering pump to get at it. My question, would you spend the $40 for a new sensor not knowing for sure if it's bad? Anyone else come across this problem and have a fix that won't cost more than the old girl is worth? From what I've read if it were something more serious than the sensor the engine would not run or run poorly.

ok first....read your code book carefully, I replaced a shift solenoid because i didnt read the book carefully...in your case...the book says camshaft position sensor A-bank 1 ckt range/perf. now look at the codes near that one and see if somewhere there it doesnt say sensor malfunction....heres the difference....if it says sensor malfunction it would be the sensor...but if it says "circuit" then the problem is in the circuit...yours actually says ckt range/ perf. I would say either you have a loose connection or a broken wire.....the sensor itself can be tested but you must remove it to do so.Also you might remove the sensor and clean it ...sometimes oil build-up or sludge will get on these sensors and cause them to do funny things....but if you remove it I would go ahead and test it...different sensors are tested in different ways so the best I can tell you is to go to your local auto parts store and buy the repair manual it will tell you how to test it. worse case ...you replace the sensor....even if it wasnt bad ...piece of mind knowing you've got a new one.

I know that sensor well. I'd not replace it just yet.
I have a rebuilt engine in my van (about 50k miles old now) and that sensor is located in a very hard to reach location. Even with the power steering pump removed, the sensor is right down almost underneath the lower intake manifold. In fact they had to shape the plastic part like half a circle just to get it to fit there. Its going to be under the glue sealing the manifold and therefore a bit more tricky to remove.
The wire that feeds that sensor is in a bad location too. It connects to the main harness right near the AC pump. I'd check the connector carefully.
In any case, I also have the stalling problem in my van and I know the sensor isn't the problem. Does your code set everytime the van stalls? I don't know what is causing the infrequent stalling, but its not that sensor.
Check the wiring, and if you have to, replace the sensor as a last resort.
