Car stalled and taken in for repair. The shop determined that the crank sensor needed to be replaced. I picked up the car and drove it home. When I went to go somewhere later that afternoon, the car would turn over - but not start. I took it back that night and left it at the shop that had done the repair work. Went back the next day in the afternoon to see what was going on and I was told that they turned it on many times during the day and no problem. Ok, I took it home again. The next day I went a few blocks (turned on right way, no problem) and when I went back to turn on the car..the same thing - turns but will not start. The fuel pressure up to the injectors appears to be ok, but again I the car will just not start. Bascially, I'm not sure if the crank sensor was the problem...but it did not fix the problem, I assume that the diagnostic machine pointed to this part? Anyway anyway - any suggestions on what I could do to get the car started? The mechanic did mention that the started was going bad...but is that something that could be causing this problem? It seems to me like there is a misconnect with the timing to spark for the car to start, but that is just a guess - any help is much appriciated

Welcome to AF.

Did you get a printout of what codes were stored? If so, please post them for us. Are there any dash warning lights coming on when the car fails to start (like the security light)? Does the starter always crank over properly (no grinding, clicking, whizzing noises) when you turn the key to start? If so, I don't know why they're saying the starter is going.

Did not get the codes, but I will call the shop tomorrow to try and get them. The starter does grind every now and then...and the wheezing too..sometimes when I'm trying to start it now it will get to the point where the wheezing finishes off my attempt so I give it up becasue at that point it doesn't seem like I'm getting anywhere - but when it's the starter, it will just go out right?

Nope, the grinding/whizzing is the starter, so that makes sense that they told you a starter is needed. I'd get it replaced before it damages the flywheel because while it's not an expensive part on it's own, the labor to replace a flywheel is!
