Hi

Just a quick post to to say hello and introduce myself. I am the lucky chap to buy 13R last month as posted in reply to another thread.

I am a total car nut so rest assured that 13R will now be getting used and not stuck in a collection. It was at goodwood last week as I live close and was first run out in the car. Unfortunately can't make the FOS this year but i am in talks to get it up the hill next year. Should be at Wilton house later in the summer and maybe few other meets.

In terms of plans for the car, it will stay in the LARK livery as I feel changing it ruins the patina of the car. It still has the stone chips and scrapes from racing and i think it should stay that way. It's not going to become yet another LM replica. What i want to do is fit extra seat (maybe 2!) and intercom, this is just to make it more useable.

What I would like to learn and hope you can help is any more about the car. I know whats on the kidsons site but would love more photos, history, videos from the time it raced. My aim is to gather all the info together and sort out book for my own use although if anyone wants it I am sure it's easy to print of extra copy.

Thanks for any help

Andy

My recomendation would be to fit a cushion to the nearside passengers well and leave the offside at it is. Removing all of the racing switchgear and fuses would certainly spoil the car.

Welcome to the forum Andy, there are some great guys on here who know so much about Mclaren.
What more could we all wish for than to have an actual owner to comunicate with!
As you can tell from my forum tag, yours is proberbly my favourite liveryed gtr.Unfortunatly i only have a model of the car to look at!
I was seriously annoyed about missing you at the Goodwood gathering, but if you will be at Wilton house ,i will drive down from York.
Fos is usually my only visit so far south!
My Mclaren gtr passion started in 1995 at Donington, when they first raced.Seen others mainly at FOS.
Anyway,about info for your car.
A few years ago i picked up a video of your car in the Japan gt championship. It is in japanese but plays fine on uk video's.It is Autosport vol22,and covers all 6 rounds, but the first 4 are just short clips.Rounds 5 & 6 however are about 20 minutes each, which just happen to be both wins for car 60.There are good racing shots and pitlane changeovers etc. Also a hot timed practice lap showing Ralf driving,Hattori spinning in the pitlane after driver change!!
I think they must have made other videos for the season detailing rounds 1-4.I remeber when i bought it being offered another one which had a proper analasis of the LARK gtr,but the price was too high!
I will try to get the video copyed ,and hopefuly see your great car at Wilton House ,to give you it in person.
Having seen Gulf,Harrods & Fina cars over the years.it would be a dream to see yours.
I will check my files for anything else, photo's etc.

Andy, Again a big hand here!

Fantastic that you have courage to write here, like I said earlier.
I can not descripe how happy I am to hearing your plans of the cars future. Even; it's your car and we all here just "say" things what we would hoped to happen, so it's more than music on to my ears what I just read.

I don't have time now to write more, (have to go to the work) but still I wan't go upload a one image of the #13R racing days 1996, what you hoped to get, history and details. Hope someone will know which race this has been is taken.

Anyway; superb starting this Thread. Thank You! :lol2:

I'm glad you appreciate the history associated with the car and plan to preserve its patina.

I'm quite happy to help satisfy your request here Andy. I'll only warn you that there isn't a whole lot of period content of the LARK GTRs floating around. This is partially due to their limited race careers, but certainly has more to do with the challenges of finding good historical content through Japanese websites.

In fact, right now I have more photos of #13R that were taken since you became its owner than I do of the car when it was actually racing and very few offer the type of quality you'd want to use to print a book with. :(

I have seen some Japanese magazines that covered the 1996 Japan GT series in my Yahoo Auctions Japan searching, however I don't have copies of any of them in my collection to even offer scans from.

I've always said this forum is in desperate need of a Japanese enthusiast to help cover that portion of the world and it's definitely true in this instance.

Andy, wellcome!

I appreciate owners like you who use their car and post on forums like these (this is the best for McLaren F1!;-))

I am a total car nut too, especially for the McLaren F1. Am trying to photograph all chassis' ever made, allthough it's almost impossible; to date 18 different F1's!

Hope to have the chance to photograph yours in the not too distant future!

I'd come especially over to the UK from Holland just for an F1! (I did that before:))

Shame you cant make it to the FoS but if you don't please let me know when and where you'll use the car (either with pm or just a reply in this topic)

HAVE MUCH FUN!!!

Hi again Andy.

Had a look in boxfiles for anything else on 13r
All i have are two Autosport[japanese] magazines to go with my video. One has your car on the cover, and drivers, last race reports etc.Other one has race reports & pictures.
Got them off E-bay years ago.
Like the video,i will try to get them scanned or copyed[or swapped for a go in your car!only joking]

The dvd i and Archangel mentioned is also invaluble to you for race coverage.
This was also bought of e-bay,but i recieved a copy, not original. So maybe this will help you because my wife said i might be able to copy it on the computer. She is better than me i'm afraid on anything to do with laptop!

Just watched dvd tonight to see difference between it and the autosport video. As mentioned video covers last two winnig rounds mainly.Dvd has roughly 2 minutes on each of the six rounds,so for rounds 1-4 it is better. But video has about 20 minutes on rounds 5&6.
Dvd has japan gt from 93 to 02[2 disks] It's funny you select which year to view, and then you can have japanese comentry or none at all just engine sounds!
A quick result on your cars performance!

Round 1 suzuka-good pit lane shot-win for car 60
Round 2 fuji-60 car spun after start-61 car win
Round 3 hi-land 60 car rear wheel hanging off, smoking into pits with both
doors open
Round 4 fuji 60 car spin!
Round 5 sugo 61 car smashed by side impact-win for car 60
Round 6 mine cicuit-lights on win for 60 car-61 car champion.

Hope to get something for you soon Andy inbetween work & family comitments
I will cross my fingers for wilton house day,and watch the forum nearer the time.
Best wishes
Keith

Like LARK60 allready put some great detail information about the races; here is a short version about the racing history. This site has some errors on information (sofar #16R and #17R cases), but I think this #13R case is right, no errors. DOC and Erik atleast can confirm this.

Team Lark McLaren, 1996 All Japan GT Championship:

By the way Andy;
have you seen these clips which are allready on the Video Clips Thread?

#13R and #040 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&hl=en-GB&v=iGcrH6R2LRc)

#13R Sugo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&hl=en-GB&v=oWUq-7-wG1I), 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Fj_srQDzOM&feature=related), 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCgnf1RMYz8&feature=related), 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKbT1z9ltUQ&feature=related), 5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBR_HShm0P0&feature=related), 6 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kj9u3xBrdc&feature=related), 7 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57QVi3neP1I&feature=related).

It must be quite outstanding to see your car way over 10 years ago; on the track racing flat out. :smokin:

And when those clips just have to say again; it's 100% right decision to keep #13R in it's LARK livery.

Here (http://supergt.net/jgtc/ex/gtc_cham/1996/gtc_1996.htm) is quite good documentation of the "1996 All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship" with all the results and some comments from the drivers like Ralf Schumacher, Naoki Hattori and David Brabham. At least Google Chrome's built-in translator makes a decent job in translating those to English. :smooch:

And congrats Andy on your acquisition! Nice to hear it stays in its racing livery and with all the patina of its racing days!

Thanks Le Man!

Yes there was some JJ Lehto mentioned!
And I knew #10R was doing that work those days, developing work to 1996 season and Le Mans.
In To The Red-book; that Nick Mason's book; there is clearly seen some documents about those test and; the name JJ Lehto is seen there if you look enough close. Also Nick tells that story about these words: "And JJ Lehto has been driven it......"

I found a comment online today from a gentleman who mentioned having photos of the LARK McLarens from the 1996 All Japan GT series so I contacted him to see what he might be willing to share. He was quick with a reply and shared this pair of images - one of 13R and the other of David Brabham and John Neilsen trying not to notice the lovely LARK Race Queens.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20J/th_LARK1996a.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20J/LARK1996a.jpg) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20J/th_LARK1996b.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/McLaren%20F1%20J/LARK1996b.jpg)
Images credit Peter Geran

In his note he explained that all his photos from that time period were shot on transparency film (slides) and while he used to have a slide scanner he was never pleased with the results he could achieve with it. Therefore, those are the only two LARK images he's got in digital form. Still they are far better than most of what can be found online in postage stamp resolution so I am thankful for that.

Andy,

Here,s a batch of pics of 13R in action from around the net. I have increased the sizes a bit in photoshop so they can be viewed . From the land who makes all the worlds cameras, you would have thought that at least the Japanese would host some decent size pics. If you wish to have the original small sizes, please let me know. After the time its taken me, I hope some are to your liking, Enjoy.

I'll have a look I may have the original artwork for this livery somewhere, I'll have to do a deep deep search. Worst case, I have the vector art for the Lark logo and 99% sure of the company who did the original graphics if you need them Andy. drop me a line

The image from Autosport posted earlier at launch was taken at Chobham. IIRC we did a photoshoot, which TBH, the pink was too purple. It didnt have all the branding on it either.

That was the first chassis built. I assume 13r

It was also good to meet up again with Le Man and, for the first time, LARK60, who's 4 hour trip down was definitely worth it

Glad he enjoyed it, great to see he enjoying the cars aswell.

Good to meet some new faces today. First time on track with the f1 today, enjoyable but was also nervous. Never raced or tracked at thruxton before and was also wet. Do want to get back out again though!

Big thanks to Andy for bringing the car out in uncertain weather.I won't forget that first glimpse i got of the car as it arrived in convoy with the other supercars.
Got back home at 9.00 after a 490 mile round trip. The day was fantastic, even though i spent most of the time looking at one car![Andy's LARK].
Nice to meet Le-man & hurstg01,their knowledge and passion for the GTR made it a perfect day
Thanks to all 3 of you

First of all I would like to say a big thankyou to Andy, for bringing out #13R and sharing with the general public. His generosity with his time and patience answering our questions and allowing us to take close up pics was immense, a true gentleman .

It was also great for Andy to win "BEST OF SHOW" and so he should, as to me there was not many cars on display that could come close to the presence created by #13R.

It was great to see this livery for the first time, a great credit to Andybee,s graphic design. What amazed me most was the colour was more pink, than the red that pics in mags and on the net portray, still it was a great contrast with the grey and sponsor logo,s :smokin:.

It was also a great pleasure to meet up with other forum members, Lark60 for the first time, I can now understand why he chose his forum name, his enthusiasm for this GTR is immense :).

Also it was great to meet Greg again and his son Thomas, another McLaren F1 fan at such a young age, as you can see in Greg,s pic, a future owner in years to come?

When I have a bit more time I,ll post up some pics.

George takes some wicked shots, and is very fortunate to get shots not just of the Mclaren but of other iconic cars - and being so young too!

First pic is a tad bit blurry, and in the second one the Rocket Red / Pink colour does look faded out. Third pic seems ok though.

#013R at home with the rest of Andy's amazing collection of supercars.

Even though it's not amongst my favourite supercars, that black F40 looks stunning.

It's been awarded the Best Garage of PistonHeads, and rightfully so indeed.

Congratulations on winning the award Andy, you certainly deserve it.  :grinyes:

Sort of. It's a C12 #76007 with specific mods done by the factory to suit Andy's tastes and repair some earlier damage. He plans to do more with the car in the future and talks about it here:
