Quick question about spark plugs

I had the carb rebuilt and the guy at the shop said i would get better performance if i gap the plugs to .35 instead of .45 (which they are at now) he said .45 is just for emmisions. my plugs and wires are only about three months old. just wondering if its worth it since i still am running a stock 305 with a q-jet

He's pulling your leg.
If the spark is enough to ignite the air/fuel mixture, a 'hotter' spark won't make it burn 'faster'.

oh ok, i cant remember if he said it will perform better, but he suggested i gap it to .35, since i got them at .45 already i might as well leave it though.

I just got the results from the dyno run also here is how it did:
max power = 130.97 max torque = 211.67
then im geussing this is after:
max power = 126.13 max torque 242.84
looks like the HP topped around 210
just wondering what all this means still learning these numbers are these typical for the setup i got?

Wow! I always was curious about dynoing my 305..too late now that my 350 is in.

the spec's on this 1983 305cu in a caprice 4 barrel carb are 150hp @3800 RPM ..240 ft lbs of torque @2400rpm
the plug spec is .045 ...I would not change this in any way because this distributor puts out a good amount of spark power to make the gap...a big gap with a powerful spark gives good fuel ignition..
on the 1983 307 olds engine the plug gap was .080 ....they used a more powerful coil to get that very high voltage ..same cap ..
plug gap should not be changed as this could effect the distributor componets..

prior to 1980 model year the caprice could have a 350 cu ..this would have 170hp @3800 RPM...in 1980 305 cu was all that was offered ..

according to the printout i got im pushin about 210 hp now. not bad for a mostly stock 305 on this car, but yeah i dont expect to get that much more out of it though

normally you should have a report showing HP @ a certain rpm...now with this info you can operate the engine to rpm this amount to produce the max HP when needed..
3800 rpm on a stock 305 produces the max HP of 150 ..
