suprisingly they do get pretty good gas mileage, my friend 'bigdantheman' used to have an 86 accord lx-i and now has an 89 5.0 and he gets about the same if not better mileage than he did in the accord. Suprised me too.

Just be careful when you start modifying. I get about 10-12 mpg around town and 13-15 mpg on the highway.

Gas mileage is very dependent on driving style. Believe it or not you can increase the gas mileage by adding a less restrictive exhaust, and intake. Dont go extreme though. A more suited rear gear can also improve your gas mileage. If you are the type that like s to hit the gas hard and accelerate quickly than these mods are no good for you.
A properly tuned 5.0 with a less restrictive exhaust, and a CAI, with 3.55 gears if driven very cautiously can net nearly 27mpg.
This is directly related to the fact that an engine is just a big compressor. The less strain that the engine is put under the more efficient.
CAI= less intake restriction, and draws air from the fender which equals denser more oxygenated air.
Exhaust= allows the engine to "exhale" easier (try breathing in through your mouth as fast as you can, and exhale through your nose, see the restriction now)
Gears= 3.55 gears will decrease the amount of initial exertion that is required to get your vehicle started, thus resulting a more efficient vehicle
BTW my 95 stang gets 5 mpg if i babie it and keep it under 3k RPM
Under hard driving you can actually watch the gas guage drop!!
