Temperature gauge not reading right...?

Engine over heated and the temperature gauge went past it's max. New resting temp on gauge is 130 instead of 100. So does that mean the temperature gauge spring maybe overextended and is now 30 degrees off? Meaning we need to subtract 30 degrees from whatever the temp is actually reading?
Thanks!

Vehicle make and model? Mileage? Original owner?
I presume this is after you had the car repaired. It is possible a different thermostat was installed during repairs that has a higher temperature when it opens, resulting in the higher gauge readout. Check with the shop to see what they put in there.
