y PIPE ???

I’m planning in increasing the HP of my 1999 max (most increase of power per $), so I’m considered installing a Y pipe, but I have two concerns:
1 How loud would the max become with a stillen y pipe?, I installed the variable muffler of the max 2000, which helps at the exhaust, without the noise (quite expensive).
2 How would this affect the emissions controls, do someone with a strict emissions controls state like California did have any trouble?, I have read that it only affects the emissions when the car is cold, just before the catalytic converter starts working (needs to be quit hot to work with the expected efficiency).

Its not that loud. Everyone has their opinion, the car certainly opens up with a deeper tone. I hear that many people in CA have passed emission when the car is warmed up. So take the car for a spin before getting it smogged. Good luck. Go with cattman performance. Reason why? Personally i think the weld is 50% better than Stillen. Stillen is a total rip off.. Stillen is short for Steal ing..(quote by mtrai760):sun:

First it is NOT a "Y" pipe, it really is an "F" pipe.....

2nd save your money and goto an exhaust place and they make you one for less than 1/2 the price....

If you have the OEM muff the noise is acceptable. :smoker2:

RX7 is implying that the y pipe looks more like an F pipe because of its struture. thats my opinion.

that is because one moron said "what should I called this?, oh I know a Y-pipe, yeah that's it a Y pipe....." and then everyone started calling it a "Y"pipe.

Like when you go to a restaurant and you say give me a "coke" instead of a soda or pop, etc...

yup, the pipe looks nothing like a "Y".

Y pipe is a popular term because many cars do have a "Y" pipe.

Either two pipes into one OR one pipe splits into two.

well the only reason I brought it up is because it pisses me off that every body follows a dumbass.

If that same person would of called it a "tampon" pipe will everybody call it tampon pipes ?

I have a Cattman Ypipe and hell yeah I felt the increase in power when I pressed on that gas pedal. I recommend that Cattman SS Ypipe for your ride. As for inspection time comes around I read most of these guys ride around until the car reaches operating temp. The two precats are for cold starts thats when they come into play. About getting a custom built one, you get what you pay for. So the choice is up to you guy.

Has anyone experienced a loss in low end power?

The STOCK Pipe is called an F pipe as where the After market one is known as the Y Pipe.

If ya had both next to each other and had to pick letters you would see why.

Enjoy The Ride...

As one who has quite a bit of experience in fabricating y-pipes I have to say that you have to go a long way to beat our pricing and product at WarpSpeedPerformance. If you can get better quality than ours for $225 go for it. Dallas and I have really improved our inital y-pipes and many feel as we do, there is no one out there who offers the quality of custom mandrel bent pipes (not butt welded pieces) with minimal welds, lazer cut flanges, lined flex section and all gaskets included for our low price. We also offer a 4 year rust through guarentee on our aluminized pipes. Currently we offer more options on y-pipe variations than anyone. Check out our site WarpSpeedPerformance.com
