I've got a 98 k1500 with a 5.7 and just had the distributor, cap and rotor button replaced 2 weeks ago. I stopped and filled the tank and drove it for about 20 mins and when i went to park it just started sputtering and shaking like its going to die, but never did. So i turned it off and got back in it to drive home and it just acted like it was skipping with a loss of power the whole way home. The check engine light came on and as it was changing gears the light started flashing till it got into overdrive and then it just stayed on. But when i got to a stop sign and had to take off it would flash on and off till it got to overdrive and then the light would stay on. It run great after the new distributor, but it seems like after i filled up with gas, everything went to crap. I had the plugs and wires replaced about 5k miles ago. I'm sure its something simple, but right now do not trust it to go long distances. Any help would be appreciated.

If check engine light is flashing it is flashing because you have a engine miss fire.

You need to pull codes and post back code no.

Was camshaft retard set after dist replaced?

Did you use AC Delco cap and rotor and plugs in it?

Several things can cause miss fires.
Bad secandary ign system.
Camshaft retard setting.
Low fuel pressure.
Bad VCM sensors.
Compression bad on cylinders.
Bad fuel.
Low fuel pressure.
Vacumn leaks.

Post back your code no.

Something simple like bad gas?
Water in the gas?
Was the gas truck just there filling their tanks? That stirs up the sediment and water and if I see the truck I go elsewhere for gas.

i went to fill up my other car and i noticed today that the gas station that i filled up the truck with has all the pumps blocked off and signs saying out of order. I don't know how long it has been that way, but could something been in the gas to make the truck act the way it did. Because when i got the distributor replaced, it was by a trained retired chevy tech and the truck run the best it has since i got the truck about two years ago. And if it was something in the gas, what do i need to do to fix. Any help would be appreciated.

I would have a take with the gas station and find out why it is out of order.
If there gas in there tanks is messed up they should pay for fixing your truck if it is crap in gas.
Take a sample of your fuel and look and see if any crap in fuel filter.
Let us know how you come out.

The fix for bad fuel is.
Depending on what and how much crap and what kind of crap in your fuel and tank.
Crap in fuel can ruin fuel pump and injectors.

EGR Valve. Check It. You can pull it out and clean it, and you should be all set.

UPDATE!!! Just in case you run into the same problem that i tried to describe, the problem was a bad distributor cap on my new distributor. Replaced with a new one and the problem went away. So i guess it was just a coincedence that it started its problem when i filled up with gas. Thanks to all who gave me input on the trouble with my truck. Thanks!
