arrgggg(paint tips anyone?)

ok so im trying to paint my 350z tamia gold (ts-19 i think (bottels downstaisrs)). so the first time i do it i just spray on with out primer. some orange peel so i try to compound it using automotive compound... paint comes off... so i finish taking the paint off with these chem pads (they dont hurt plastic but they are solvents). then i primed it with testors flat white. major orange peel, so i sand it down till its all smooth. next i spray on the gold paint. minor orange peel. (half the can or more used), so i go to sand it with 1200 grit wet and the paint comes off... argggg. any sugjestions on my 3rd repainting?

ive actualy read it.. .im not that much of a noobi i just dont post much. i just wanted to knwo if i had totaly screwed something up .. or if this is just bad luck for me.

If you're getting orange peel the whole time, you're spraying from too far away which is causing the paint to dry too much whilst airbourne and so it does not smooth on the surface of the model.

Sounds like you aren't spraying enough coats and you sand through to the primer too quickly?

I would advise to use a higher grit paper and to use lighter and fewer strokes. At least 2000+, and be wary of sharp or raised edges, these places are where the paint is thinnest. :)

Did yuo wash the body in warm water with a mild detergent? Greasy spots can cause alot of problems.

theres still primer on the car the gold just came off realy easily. and even though the gold was sanded off ther was still orange peel. guess ill go try to find some c2c and a diffent type of primer and try adding more coats of paint this time

i washed the car in dishsoap before i sprayed the primer and i sanded it in warm water . i guess not enough paint got on the model. time to strip again...

Also, Tamiya spray paints are incompatible with Model Master primers, since MM primers are enamel based and Tamiya is lacquer based (remember, LEA - Lacquers first, enamels second, acrylics third - not the other way around!)

Also, metallic colors like gold need to be clearcoated in order to be polishable...and you need to let them cure for a period of time before you can do any sort of polishing work

so should i have cleared before i tried sanding out the orange peel? i wana get it right this time i cant afford to keep buying the same paint . and the store doesnt sell tamiya primer so whats a good substitute? tahnks

Strip the model right back and start again.
2-3 light coats of primer followed by 3-4 finish coats 10-14 days later.

dONT mix the brands of paint...stick to the same type like tamiya primer and finish.

will a tamiya white work as a primer? and for polishing will automotive compound work? (the store i go to doesnt sell any finishing supplies) other then that any other sugjestions?

Try to get some Duplicolor, Plastikote, or KRylon primer at your local Walmart or home improvement store

If you can't do that Tamiya matt white would work, and yes automotive compounds should work.

If the shop has Tamiya paint, they should be able to order you in some Tamiya primer too. In theory, if they have Tamiya paints, they should have links to Tamiya, so getting it in for you shouldn't be a problem. Check to see what it's going to cost before you confirm your order too :).
