Horsepower question

I notice on the civic4g.com website (very good site) that american releases for the 4th gen hatches, sedans and crx's were very down on power compared to EDM and JDM specs. For instance, the bottomline JDM CRX, the 1.5X dual carb engine generated 105-8HP. whereas the top of the line USDM CRX Si with multipoint FI only generated 108HP. It does not make any sense to me...The top of the line JDM CRX generating up to 170HP!!
Is it because USDM releases are subjected to VERY stringent emissions regulations that their engines are so de-tuned...? That would not make sense either, because I imagine european emission standards to be just as high as that of the states...

we do have very strict laws here in the states on emissions and the EPA and stuff, california being the worst.
because of these reasons we dont see very high horsepower supercars over on this end(ie Civic type R, NSX R, Accord R, SiR).
oh well at least when the WRX Sti comes out over here, it will finally be better than the one you guys will get.

Our design rules and emissions controls are as stringent as the US except for california (which we are getting closer to), but we get a lot of top spec Japanese cars. Admittedly we only got the twin-carb 105bhp 4th gen Hatch and ZC (Si) CRX with 130bhp... but then again, our octane ratings wern't high enough. Since the introduction of 98 octane years ago we started to get the top spec cars.
Look at Japans octane ratings and you'll see why they didn't export.
The EE8 and EE9 Euro VT (SiR) was detuned to 150 bhp for this reason as well.
BTW - the EF8 CRX only had 160 bhp as did the EF9 Civic
The EG6 Civic had 170bhp

Ummm.... thanks for coming... yes they do :finger:
And yeah - we've had the WRXs for about 7 years too :)
Then of course, there's all the Evo Lancers, GSR Lancers, Skylines, Silvias, 180SXs, Soarers, RSRs that we get to import now... hmmm.... damn, Australia really is the "lucky" country :)

we have had skyline gtrs on general sale since 1998. but they dont seem quite as sexy as jap ones cause htey have these crappy indicator lights and the two air scoops either side of the big one in the middle (look at me with the technical names) are filled in. give me a 'grey' import anyday.
