MKI Scirocco build II

GTIDude has got a build going as well and I hope we can keep one another motivated to finish our builds.
Here is the kit, from AMT.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/hobbies252.jpg?t=1276233892
These are the wheels I'll use on one of the kits
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/01405c.jpg?t=1276234572
This is the other box version of the same wheel kit.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/hobbies914020.jpg?t=1276234794
As you can see the tires that come w/the Aoshima wheels are to big. You can use the Aoshima Kia parts tires, they work
great but @ up to $18 bucks a wheel/tire kit, that's $$$ for just tires. So one day while out shoppoing for some 1/64 diecast
I noticed Jada Toys 1/35 Mach 5 had some tires I thought might work.
I bout 2 of the Mach 5s for $5 bucks.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/hobbies191.jpg?t=1276234909
As you can see the Wheel/tire combo on the right, above, works much butter for today's 1/1 style of Wheels/tires.
The tires do not have the best tread detail but I'm happy w/the low profile.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/hobbies218.jpg?t=1276235273
You can see the tire on the right "sinks" in the middle so I took some evergreen strips and carfully glued them to the middle
of the wheels and the tires,(one on the Left above) Look much better.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/hobbies220.jpg?t=1276234679
I don't have a huge amount of progress yet.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3354.jpg
Right now I'm using the engine from a Revell MKII kit. It is not much better
than the amt kit but is a little bigger. I'm trying to build up a "shrick" style oil-pan, still has some cleaning up to do.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3393.jpg
I also need to get some new batteries for my camera. Photos are crap.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3356.jpg
Thanks for looking. I hope to get a few hours in this weekend and get some better photos up w/more progress worth viewing.

Try Model Empire. That's where I got mine. Not sure if they have any more. (I think I purchased mine around 2 yrs ago.) Their website is not much but buy their catalogue and give them a call. They are kinda old-school but have a lot of older kits.

I think you see what smaller wheels would look like under it, like some 17" bbs, etc. Also great find with those aoshima bbs wheels, i would love to find a pair. Ive seen some of those go for $30 on ebay. Good luck with your build.

Yeah, I scored both sets for $7.95 each. Both Aoshima and Fujimi have been re-releasing some of their older wheel kits. Just keep our fingers crossed that some of these older BBSs are on the list.

Very little progress. I've spent way to much time trying to build a detailed engine, scratch building more realistic head/tail lights and grill, (did not help that I picked up "Red Dead Redemtion" a week ago..) so I'm going to take a step back and work on the body and interior so I can feel as though I'm progressing. I did spend some time last Sat. smoothing the engine bay, but nothing worthy of photos.

OOOOHHH, I love it! so going with the 16V and ditching the good ole 1.8 8v? I am building a real 8V in my garage right now for a fox, so if you need any pics for the bottom end, lmk, I'll snap some.

O.K. So I'll get these parts smooth out and ready so I can paint tomorrow. Right now the stacks are just mocked up w/elmers. I'll add plug wires and other details to it. Not sure it will fit in the Rocco though, it came w/the Revell MKII kit.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3593.jpg?t=1282358002
The manifold I cut down from a Ferrari Testarossa intake.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3599.jpg
Same thing w/the Valve cover.
O.k. Here a few more photos. I almost scrapped the Schrik oil pan, I'm glad I didn't. Once puty'd and painted,(Color will change once final prep is done.) it really looks pretty good. I know the scale of the fins is on the "over-sized" side but I like it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3603.jpg?t=1282517218
Here you can see I removed the coils from the valve cover and installed an oil cap and tube.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3609.jpg
I painted the intake gold because I wanted some contrast in the engine other than black and aluminum but I don't think I like the gold. I also sanded down the timing belt cover so I can actually expose the pulleys and timing belt. I plan to use carbon fiber decal for the tb cover.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3612.jpg
I'd planned on painting the valve cover simi-gloss black but was out of paint. So I'll hit up the hobby shop tomorrow at lunch...Let me know what you think.

O.K. a few quick engine updates. Sorry for the photo quility, amazing what a diff. not having my tripod makes...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3620.jpg?t=1283312724
I'm realy happy w/how the schrik oil pan turned out. There are some rough spots that I would touch up if entering it in a show
but this one is just for me so I can live w/it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3619.jpg
I've got the intake painted and glued on. I'm prepping the volocity stacks and will glue those on in the next day or so.
(Though I'm looking at buying some real aluminum stacks.)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3618.jpg
I wanted a darker color valve cover to contrast all the aluminum but now I'm not sure I like it. I tried a lighter grey but
it was lost in all the silver.

It's looking very good from here. That oil pan turned out great! I also really like the Ferrari intake setup. keep it up, you'll have one heck of a motor before long.

Thanks. I'll post photos of the stock motor and of a real Schrik pan. It's not perfect but I'm happy w/it. I'm on vacation all next week, my wife is at school all day, and my daughter is starting pre-school so I'll have some major build time...

O.k. did a little more work today.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3712.jpg
Glued the remaining velocity stacks. I know they are un-even. I'll fix that later. I also installed the scratch=built oil cap.
The white piece is the Ferrari Testarossa intake I used to the one on the rocco engine.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3709.jpg
I'd planned on working on the header tonight but, like an idiot, I locked the garage keys, inside the garage...:uhoh:
My wife has the spares....
Please let me know what you think.

I'm building 2 Bmw engines (e24&e36) and i'll love to build this one... ;)

Like the flat green Revell's MKII in the back too.. :)

keep on work!!

Thanks guys. It's getting there. I'll be kind of stalled on the engine for a while as my next step is to add a Metal Masters pully/belt kit and AN fittings and braided lines. (And I don't have the spare $$$ for that right now.) So I've been prepping the body for paint.
Yeah, I had abandon the flat green build a couple years ago but now that I see how expensive the Revell MKII kits have become, I'm going to start it back up.

O.K. Here's a little more progress. I got the door handles shaved and the recesses filled, shaved the rear emblems
and hatch release. I test sprayed it w/intermediate blue. Primarily as a primer and to look for imperfections in the body. But,
I also like the color so I wanted to see how it'd look. Trying to decide once all the body work is done if I'll re-spray it in
I-Blue again, and add a simi clear as it's a flat military color. ???
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3750.jpg?t=1286239670
It looks more grey than blue in the photos but under direct light the blue shows through.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3751.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3743.jpg?t=1286239808
Let me know what you think gang. And you putty experts, I'm using Tamaya Putty, what can I due to get rid of the pin-holes,
bubbles once I sand it down? Also the door handles even though sanded down, are still showing. More sanding??? Or is there a
technique I'm missing?

Spent the last couple hours on the Chassis. Because of the engine, I couldn't do straight axle in the front and the wheels and tires are to wide to adapt what came w/the 30yr old kit. So, I kit-bashed a front suspension from a for focus kit.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3754-1.jpg
The stance is close to where I want it. Once everything is tacked down it should sit a little lower.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3755.jpg
I dropped the engine in real quick to see how it'll look.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3757.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v334/sbvwfanatic/Wheels/HOBBIES/100_3760.jpg
I'm pretty happy as I was worried that it wouldn't fit under the hood and w/out scraping the oil pan but it'll just fit on both ends.

I know I've been away from this build for awhile but I can't beleave it's been almost two years. I've gone through build droughts before but never this long. It explains why I've been aching to build over the last 2-3 weeks.

"Time to get busy!"
