You can get a Hyundai Accent GL for $9998, it's not very good though.

I'd say that a used Nissan 300ZX would be a pretty good choice. It has power and looks. ;)

Used third gen (93-) RX-7. Get one with either an R1 or R2 package.

For new cars, I'd look at the Mazda Protoge, Ford Focus, or the Honda Civic. If it was my money, (and I didn't want to turn it into a race car) I'd try to get a Protoge ES.

I believe that perhaps next year we may see the Civic Type R on our shores!! I got this info from kind of a gossip web site (they also posted half a dozen artists' interpretations of what the new "Integra" would look like, and none of them were right on the money). And hey, even if it doesn't make it over here, you can be sure that a new and improved Civic Si will be here within a couple years.
You think Honda is going to be shuddering at the thought of having to beat out a 180-horse SE-R (sorry Nissan fans, you know where my faith and loyalty lies) ?? I think not.

are you looking at something that'll be really reliable? or something you can work on and have some fun with? Cuz reliability, just a basic econo car... like a lude, a jetta, the basics.. but as far as something you can f around with.. hmm.. that's hard.. like maybe an old muscle car, or even (if you get lucky) I saw a de tomaso pantera for 15k once... not too much wrong with it, just a little rusty... but it had fords 351 engine in it.. and it was quick as shit. 0-60 in 5.5 seconds or somethin...
