Door Chime

The door chime goes off whenever the driver's door is opened. It does this without a key in the ignition, lights on, etc. I have tried jiggling the key in the door lock and readjusting the steering wheel with no luck. I would like to disconnect it but need to know how and if doing so will affect any other functions.

Another example methinks of too many keys on a keyring wearing down the lock cylinder before its time. I'd lubricate the Lock Cylinder for starters as it believes there is still a key in it. My FOB has two keys on it - Ignition and House. Also a contributing factor is letting the Tilt Wheel slam up when released.

I had the same problem with my 96 Crown Vic. It was really annoying so I disconnected the module. Only problem I noticed is that I kept leaving the headlights on. I'm too old fashioned to use the auto headlight function. The module is under the dash about the middle, facing the drivers side. I'll see if i can find a picture, I've got a picture some where.

I am also having this problem. I noticed that if I tap the lock cylinder up lightly it stops. If I were to change out the cylinder will this fix it or is there something else behind the cylinder that has worn out?

Mine had the same thing, I got the cylinder replaced but it didn't fix it and I remember the guy who replaced it said something about a module being repaired (I can't remember which one, maybe the lights control module) but it solved the problem only for a while; since then the windows will only come down if the key is in the KOEO or KOER position, they won't work if I turn the key backwards :-S (any idea on this?). Finally guess what seemed to fix the problem: a bad battery. I have no idea how can this be possible but that's how it happened. Maybe you should give it a try, it wouldn't hurt to jumpstart the battery and see if the chime is gone.

Here's a quick update, the door chime in my '95 Town Car is back I tried the battery thing that had worked before but had no success I kept trying everything tampering the wires under the dashboard , at the engine compartment, everything and the only thing I found was that if you turn the windshield wipers on and then turn and remove the key the door chime will disappear even if you turn the key on, turn the wipers off and then remove the key again it will work the way it should.

Anyone can comment on this? Any electrical diagram?.

Just in case, today I found something that if I disconnect the clock on the dashboard (mine's not working) the chime and Anti-theft system will work as usual and there will be no other problems.

Is everyone else's clock working normally?

My clock works fine. I don't see the relevance between the clock and the door chimes, but I have seen weirder stuff, so anything is possible

Well I didn't see it's relevance either but it works; the clock seems to be a problem according to another forum and the explanation is

the culprit turned out to be a defective clock module that was backfeeding voltage to the lcm to make it think that the key was always rotated to the acc position.
The lcms in these cars will ding if the ACC feed is high and the drivers door is ajar even if the key isn't in the ignition.

It wouldn't hurt to give it a try, after all it's a 5 minute job.

Another possibility:

More than likely, the key recognition tab has broken off and lodged itself in the key cylinder. Are you having intermittent problems actually turning the key to 'START' and 'RUN' ??? If you are, this is probably the problem. Locksmiths usually use a dental pick to remove the offending piece, but a piece of piano wire with a hook bent on the end will work.

You could also try and inspect the lock cylinder itself (it's another 5 minute job):

Removal

1. The following procedure applies to vehicles that have a functional ignition switch lock cylinder (11582). Lock cylinder keys are available for these vehicles, or the lock cylinder key numbers are known and the proper key can be made.

Disconnect battery ground cable (14301).

2. Turn ignition switch lock cylinder to RUN position.

3. Place a 3.17 mm (1/8 inch) diameter wire pin or small drift punch in hole in upper steering column shroud (3530) under ignition switch lock cylinder. Depress retaining pin while pulling out on ignition switch lock cylinder to remove it from steering column tube flange (3511).


Installation

1. Install ignition switch lock cylinder by turning it to RUN position and depressing retaining pin. Insert ignition switch lock cylinder into steering column tube flange. Ensure ignition switch lock cylinder is fully seated and aligned in interlocking washer before turning key to OFF position. This will permit cylinder retaining pin to extend into ignition switch lock cylinder housing hole.

2. Rotate ignition switch lock cylinder, using lock cylinder key, to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions.

3. Connect battery ground cable.

I had the exact same problem with my car, I had no clue what caused it at first and honestly didn't care, but after tearing apart my dash time and time again to replace the Blend Door Actuator motor, my car is a '96 Town Car, I removed the trim off of the steering column and removed the lock cylinder, there is a wire with a piece of plastic on it. The plastic locks in place into the lock cylinder and has a tab connected to the wire and when the key is in, it gets a connection and causes the chime to go on, but the plastic guard to keep it from hitting the lock cylinder its self breaks so it goes on all the time. I removed the wire from the lock cylinder, covered the end in electrical tape, and hid it in the trim panels that go around the steering column, it has never gone on again, and the headlight chime still works now.
