2001 Lesabre won't start - please help

At first the remote control stopped working, I thought it was the battery. Then I could not open the trunk from the inside of the car. When I tried to start the engine, nothing happened at all. No lights, no noise, the engine did not turn over. The battery is 1 or 1.5 years old. From reading the web it does not seem like it's the battery.

Thanks in advance

Here's a crazy update. Started to jump the car. The jumper cables are connected and the assisting car is running. Tried my remote on the Buick - it worked. Put the key into ignition and turned. At first got a couple of clicks/grunts. Tried one more time - gray smoke started to come up from the engine, on the left hand side between the coolant tank and the engine. Then there was a pop and I obviously stopped trying :(

What is going on?
Thanks

Any leaks?, it may just have popped back from low voltage, leave the jumpers on for 5 minutes, try it again. Not much we can see or do from here.

maxwedge, there are no leaks, nothing visibly burned. Retried jumping/jumpering. Now the remote does not work during the hookup and turning the key does not do anything. So it seems like something did go :(
If nothing comes to mind, I guess it's a tow to the mechanic?

fuses???

I opened up the fusebox under the hood. Looks as clean as it can be - nothing burned, nothing melted.

Even though the battery is fairly new, that does not mean it is good. You need to have the battery load tested to verify condition. All indications point to a dead cell in the battery.

HotZ28, thanks! You got my hopes up. Going to get a new battery tomorrow.

Let's hope the engine it is not hydrolocked!

HotZ28, it was simply a bad battery. Advanced Auto replaced it since it was only a 16 months old. Thanks for your help guys.

P.S. Good lesson for me too, a "new" battery can die too.
