hey guys, i'm new here but not new to the X...
...anywho, i've searched the forums and didn't find the answer i was looking for so i figured i'd ask...
i'm plannig on buying the 'space case' cargo box from the REI sale next week. the folks at REI are tring to up-sell crossbars and X-mounts to me. now when i visit http://www.xterraparts.com (Xterra Parts . com) their site says no additional mounts needed. is REI just tring to up the sale or are these extra parts actually needed.
i have an '01 with no additional mods to the factory rack. what do i really need to have attach the cargo box and have it be as secure as possible.
thanks in advance....:D

you will need mighty mounts.
i would call xterraparts and ask them to be sure. rei is good at robbing people.

If a Yakima box/rack/etc uses mighty mounts (horizontal or vertical) then you should be able to use the Xterra rack (like Evergreen says use xterraparts.com). I believe the Xterra rack is rated to 150lbs (maybe 125, but that's for laywers) which is also the weight capacity of the cargo box you're looking at.
The only problem I've found with the mightymounts is making sure you get a tight fit on the Xterra crossbars so that your box doesn't shift under load. But I'm using a Kargomaster steel rack and have sort of retrofitted the mightymounts to work with it.

thanks you 2, i really appriciate it.
if anyone else has any experience with this (spefically the yakima cargo cases and xterra stock roof mtg.) please don't hesitiate to chime in. i'll really tring to figure out what attachment method is best to use; mighty mounts (vertical or horizional) or x-mounts or just the supplies that come standard with the cargo box.
once again, thanks in advance to anyone who can help...:)

Ask the guys at REI to open one of the boxes so you can have a look at the mounts. Then you can make the determination to ge the horizontal mighty mounts

Most likely it uses horizontal mounts. You'll want the oval ones at Xterraparts as the ones they're pitching at you would be for their round bar. But I agree check at REI for which mounts it uses, or their website probably says too.
The nice thing about the Xterra rack is you don't need another rack to put Yakima stuff on it.
