check engine light stays on

Hi All
I have a 93 GMC cargo van .
My problem is the van won't start what I need to know why the check engine light is on and stays on it should go out after a min when i turn the key on .
here's what happens when I turn the key on the light comes on blinks once and stays on

Does the starter motor turn the van's engine over, or do you just get a click or nothing at all when trying to start it? Does the key have a VATS resistor in it? Do you have another key you can try?
As for the Check Engine Light staying on, that's indicating that the car's Powertrain Control Module (PCM) recognizes an issue with the system. You can pull the diagnostic codes using a single jumper wire (http://autorepair.about.com/library/ts/obd-i/bl-dtcs-33a.htm?once=true&;).
