2000 Sentra PO300etc. needs motor detective

Hi, I'm new. Here's the short history. A recurring check engine light. The usual code is PO171. My mechanic replaced one 02 sensor, then the fuel pump. It ran ok but the engine light returned.

People have suggested that I spray-clean the MAF, which I did. Up until then the engine was running ok . Then I tried the "Idle Air Volume learning procedure". Then the engine ran terrible, code PO300 multiple misfires and PO 732, pending. Cyl 2 and 3.

I had to drive a few miles with engine misfiring, surging, and very little power. When home, the engine was hot, some antifreeze was overflowing.

To further complicate this mystery, the gas tank has been very slow to fill for a long time.

The spark plugs have a brownish/white ash.

I have read many many posts where people have done the trial and error method, trying this and that and throwing money away. I have the repair EC manual but it reads like greek to me.

Can the MAF be tested with a simple, digital multi-meter?


I'd LOVE to hear some advice in plain english. (I don't understand most of the tech-speak nor most of the abbreviations.) Thanks.
