Rev limiter and stalling?

I have a 2004 Lincoln LS Ultimate. Yesterday, I floored the throttle to pull out on the highway and the engine immediately stopped running. I assume this is caused by the rev limiter kicking in. After getting it in to a safe area, I tried to start the car. Each time the car will crank properly, but will only idle for about 5 seconds and then stop again. It repeatedly does this. Any clue what could be going on? I had to have it towed to a mechanic, as the dealerships were closed. I really don't want to get screwed in this situation, so having a clear idea of what is happening will help. Not sure if this would be related, but the car was on a top-load car hauler for about 2 days prior to me driving the car. I have had no indications of problems with the car before this happened. It always has great performance.

The rev limiter at 3K works only in park & reverse, there is a speed limiter but you have to be going over 120mph. Sounds like the COP(coils) are going out, did you get a CEL? The COP are under warranty for 10 years or 100K miles on your 2004.

No, the rev limiter didn't do this. (It's 3K in neutral/park, and 6.5K in gear.)
I assume that you didn't get an engine power reduced warning. Anyway, your symptoms don't fit with that or with a coil issue. My best guess is that it's either a MAF problem or a fuel pump issue. You can try to rule out a MAF issue by disconnecting the MAF. If the engine then runs without stalling, try cleaning the MAF and look for any air leaks between it and the manifold.
If there's no luck with the MAF, then measure the fuel pressure.

Thanks for the info. It is much appreciated. I've never even heard of a rev limiter before yesterday, so I didin't know it had to be in park or neutral. Good to know. The mechanic says the fuel filter is awful and the throttle body needs to be cleaned.
