My check engine light is on. When I press the gas, the RPM increases but the car barely accelerates. I don't know anything about cars. What's wrong with it and can I fix it myself?

Welcome to the forum!
We're going to need a lot more information to provide much help. For starters, what is the year, make, and model of the car? Also, what engine does it have? Does the engine idle fine, or is it rough? When was the last tune up performed? Did anything happen to the car or the weather just prior to this loss of power?

Thanks. Its a 1999 Jeep Cherokee sport. I think its a V6 or V8, not totally sure. The engine idles fine. I don't think anything happened to it other than being driven by horrible drivers who accelerate and brake like crazy. I don't think its been tuned up for a while.

i agree, go get it scanned at a local advance auto parts or autozone for free... write down the code, have them reset it with their OBD II scanner & then see if it comes back to confirm the same code...
