4wd civic

so much stuff i need to do to my car....but i've started my search for a donor car.....decided not to sell my hatch but to improve upon it.....

might go for the b16a1 swap just b/c i plan on adding endyn's supercharger....but i'm looking for a 90-91 4wd wagon to turn my civic into a 4wd....i've looked at that crx they converted to 4wd but i don't think that's going to help me since they used a crv......any helpful info on this subject will be appreciated:devil:

the 4wd from the wagovan wasnt all that great, it always broke down, since the crv is based on the civic platform, it shouldnt be too hard to convert it over.

yeah but finding a crv price wise v/s a wagon isn't worth it.....besides can't u just build up the awd system on the wagon? replace oem for bette parts??

i guess thats feasible.

i read that they could only handle 120hp....but i believe i'd have to change too much stuff to put in a crv awd system

Several problems with a B16a powered AWD Civic.

The AWD Gear box will only fit a D series engine.
The rear diff is VERY weak, as in they are easy to break with the orginal D series engine, a B16a would shred one in seconds.

CRV running gear into an AWD body would be a better idea, but you still have the problem of a weak center and rear diff, as the CRV was never designed to handle lots of hp.
And you would still need to do a lot of custom work getting it all to fit and line up, as the CRV is based on the later EG an EK platforms which is quite differnt to the smaller and lighter EF platform.



If you really really want an AWD Car then go buy a Subaru or Mitsi, Honda's are simply not designed with AWD in mind.

However that said I have seen (and I dont know if I believe it myself) an AWD VTi-R Integra. I knew from talking to a Honda tech who trained in Japan that the enginers played with a B18c powered AWD integra, but he didnt think they ever made any production models. But its possible they did. Unforunatly for anyone out side Japan and anywhere they accepts thier used cars you will never get to see one.

skratch out the b16a and insert the sohc....

i'm sure i could make the 4wd system on the wagovan work.....all about being an euthieust (sp)....i just know it'll require some time and stuff like that.....i'm sure it is possible to get the gear box to handle high hp...anything possible

True anything is possible, but practical? thats a different story.

I'm all for crazy tinkerings, one of my goals is to convert my cousin's FWD protege GT to a RWD or AWD rotary powered vehicle.

The AWD civic idea however is not a very good one if your going to use the wagon drivetrain. In the long run it would probably be a lot simpler and cheaper to use the CRV equipment. However if your determind, just find a wagon and have at it.

what year crv would i use on this venture???

I see mto recollect there being an AWD 4th gen sedan... one was imported to Australia according to a friend who's seen it. If so, I wonder what the drivetrain is like on that... ;)

Its the same as the Shuttle mate, Iv seen a few of them here in NZ, all ex Japan of course.
Infact they are more common than the AWD shuttle which the silly yanks keep calling a wagon.


The most feasible way I can think of it being done would be to work over a ZC (turbo :D ) and mount it to the AWD gear box, which Im sure could be fitted with either a gear set from a regular D series g/box, or in some way strengthened.
Then replace the rear diff with one from either an old Nissan 180b, or 200sx/240sx/silvia/whateverthefuckyouwanacallit or Mazda MX5/Miata/hairdresserscar or AWD 323/Familia/fordlazer/TX3i/etcetcetc
It would require custom mounts to attach it to the chassis, and custom work done to the drive shaft and axles to match it all up.

You looking at I guess about a $1,000 worth of work assuming you know someone who can give you mates rates, then you still have to worry about getting it certified, and thats just for the diff.
The G/box would set you back at least another grand, maybe more.
And of course on top of that you have to include the engine, suspension and brake upgrades.
If you had a spare $10,000 lying around then maybe its a doable project, but for that kind of money I would rather buy a GTR Mazda Familia and start with AWD and 240hp.

if you WERE to convert to awd using a CR-V platform, I would suggest using the 1st gen CRV since it is B-series powered. if i am correct, i believe the new CRV is powered by the K-series.... and i just figure the more stuff you can keep similar the better...
