98 Beetle stuck in third and fourth gear

The missus went and gt an oil change and right after the car will only shift in third or fourth gear, it moves through the gears fine but only those 2 working. What is it and how can I fix it?

Are you talking about an auto trans or manual trans ? Go to an auto parts store and ask them to pull codes with their scanner . It sounds like the vehicle is in limp home mode which most times is 2nd or third gear only. My guess is that when the oil change guys tried to up sell an air filter they may have messed up the maf sensor connection. If the pcm is not getting a signal of the amount of air flow it will default to a limp home default mode until repairs can be made . You'll probably get a mass air flow sensor low volt input code .

It's a standard, and the check engine light is not lit. I am assuming it is linkage related, but am not certain where to look.
