what is a Peripheral port ?

what is a Peripheral port ? what does it do performance wise and how is it performed?

they put another intake port in the rotor housing. Ive heard the engine wont last very long

used to make gobs of power. Not very streetable, because the car has to idle at around 2k, and doesnt make good power till aobut 7k RPM's. but it makes power up through aobut 11k. No, they dont generally last very long.

why doesnt it perform in the low rpms? is it because the large port area doesnt create enough vaccuum to suck in enough fuel/air mixture? if so, couldn they have an adjustable plate that covers it during idle and low rpm and gradually uncovers as rpm increases - kinda like the equivalent of a vtec system in a piston engine. also, why do they become less durable?

Yeah, not enogh intake velocity.
they COULD, but its way too complicated to do that. Gotta remember that its normal people doing this.

And the reason they dont last so long is ebcasue of the fact that they make power at 7k + RPM. Therfore, people will be driving (read: racing) them at high RPM.

so if they had a "rotary vtec" it would be streetable and durable? maybe i should tell mazda :)

Nope, sorry. Mazda already thought of it back in 85. That's why the 2nd gen N/A engines have a 6 port system where only 2 ports per rotor are open until ~3800 RPM, then a 3rd starts opening.

I think what Bdizzle7 means by a "rotary vtec" is a variable valve system on a P-port (that is what the topic is you know).

Mazda did have a variable P-port. It it most well known in the R26B.

Picture it as a caulking gun where the plate that pushes the goo out of the tube being controled to retract as a RPM increases

i have lots to say against those that don't think p-ports are durable, out here in Los Angeles we have a RX2 with a 13b p-port.
been daily driving it for the past three years since it was put in, thats rite 3 years.
we rev it to over 12,000rpm.
it is driven by a buddy of ours who himself is generations older than most of us, he's about 60 years
he races it at track events and does a consistent 12.10
he pushes it to about 13,000 with the help of a 175 shot nitrous
i invite anyone that would like to see the car to drop me a line some time.
