turn signal lever 2002 z28

I have a 2002 Z28 with a turn signal lever issue. It has become progressively worse to the point that now it does not signal in either direction and appears to be loose in the column shroud. The stalk is still attached to what appears to be a small black assembly and the crusie and high beams still operate. Any idea what might be wrong and how hard would it be to fix on my own. Thanks in advance.
