I am thinking about buying a BMW 325xi sportwagon (my first BMW). I would be grateful for feedback on the reliability and the longevity of the engine, transmission (I would get an automatic), and awd system. Many thanks.

Think twice before buying an AWD vehicle,
especially from someone who is not known
to specialize in them. Added maintenance,
increased weight and more things to break.
If you do not need it, it is not worth it.

I've got a 2002 325xi. Odometer indicate about 120000 km and I don't have any problems with AWD systems. I've tried both A4 and BMW xi series, and I've found that:
yes, Audi AWD systems is better, homever, drive handling is not at the same level than BMW.
BMW'S DSC on awd model is less interventionist than Audi system.
You have two choice :
a) no AWD and very very little bit more performance
b) you choose AWD, and have a very good car 12 months per years
