The AC in my GA (2001 with 3.4) has been working pretty good, but a couple weeks ago it stopped blowing cold air. I recharged it and all was good until monday. Monday was a pretty hot day. It started out blowing cold air, but then all of a sudden it began to smell awful and blow hot air. I figured that I lost a seal somewhere and what I was smelling was the refrigerant leaking out. So. . .I got a can of r134a with the dye in it so I could figure out where it's leaking out of. . .but it won't take the charge. . .I put the hose on there and the pressure guage just about maxes out, and none of the refrigerant goes into the system. Any ideas? The compressor kicks on for a couple seconds and then back off, and cycles like that (the same as it does when one needs a charge). Thanks for any ideas guys.

you might have overcharged the system.

the burning smell could have been the compressor clutch that slipped and burned due to the too high pressure. Also, there might be an high pressure switch too, so if it get too high it stop.

Those systems come with gauges, there is a reason for that: over filling can kill the system
