help stock radio issues

i just bought a 2003 spyder eclipse convertible gts. Love the car with a passion except my radio doesn't work very well. the radio stations very often go in and full of static. the manual says the antenna goes up automatically when the radio is turned on but mine doesnt, and i've notice other eclipse convertibles on the road and there's isn't up either. is there issues with these stock radios? or what could be the problem? it's driving me crazy!
