Starter Fried

hello,
need some help with why my starter went bad all of the sudden rather than somewhat gradually. yesturday morning after turning on the car it was running rough and some sqeeling. no check engine lite. tried to turn it off and it wouldn't turn off. drove it less than 2 miles to the mechanic. on the way some smoke and then after that ran fine. started up the first time after shutting it off at the mechanic but after that no go. mechanic said starter was fried. replaced it and now running ok. any ideas? thanks for your time. :confused::confused:

Sounds like the internal starter solenoid would not disengage. Only way to disenage it would have been to wack the starter to dislodge it or disconnect a battery cable. Your ignition switch is spring loaded to return to the run position when you release it. Make sure it is always doing that.

Thanks for your help. Had the starter tested and it was fried so installed a rebuilt one. how do i know if the ignition spring is always disengaging. still not throwing and dx codes. thanks again. :banghead::banghead:
