Hey, my 240 needed a new starter, so I ordered a rebuilt starter online. I installed it, but reconnecting the battery cable created heavy sparks and caused the starter to spin with no key in ignition. Any help? Thanks.

Ok on your starter there should be 2 wires on the side of it, be sure those arnt touching, and if that doesnt work take off your steering column, and make sure you igniton wires arnt frayed.

Okay, the two wires on the new(er) starter definitely aren't touching and it is definitely hooked up the same way the old one was. I took apart my steering column and looked at the ignition switch. I thought maybe the switch may just be stuck closed and need to be replaced so I removed it. But still when I put the battery terminal back on, there are sparks and the starter will still start running on it's own. I would think that by removing the ignition switch that it would completely interrupt the line, not the case. Any other ideas?

take both starters to autozone or advance auto parts or whatever local auto parts store you have ...

have both of them "bench tested" & post results

at least this way, you'll rule out the starters and then work on finding the wiring or switch fault
