[QUOTE=joeyo]Just curious as to what type of gas you put in your 4g? Regular, "Medium" or "Super"[
In CANADA (this is where i leave) we have access to 94 octane and it's very good for my ride.

higher grade fuel helps prevent detonation, which is the reason for the slower burn.

Not quite sure what you're trying to say here. But,the reason they burn slower is because they contain more octane (see HowStuffWorks.com). And, higher octane fuels prevent detonation because they can be COMPRESSED more before spontaneously combusting.

if you want the most bang, just have it detonate all day.

If you want to discuss this fine. If you want to be a jackass then go waste somebody elses time.

but it does help the engine run cleaner by helping it prevent detonation and usually higher octane fuels have more additives than lower grades; which can help with the emissions.

You're still not getting it. Detonation and running "cleaner" are not related. Higher octane prevents detonation. Period. That's it. That's all it does. If you have higher compression, you need more octane. As far as additives go, I've never heard of higher octane fuels having "more" additives. This is the myth of "premium" fuels and a very common misconception that somehow they are better for your engine. They have more octane, and as far as I can tell that's all. You want additives change companies (Chevron w/ techron, right?), not grades.

i have a d15b with just little head milling and advanced timing, it pretty much wont run on anything less than 93(we dont get 91 over here), which is what i use. I also got my cousin to start using premium on his 96 dodge neon. he says the engine is much smoother.

Methods for computing octane ratings vary by region. Somebody earlier in this post gave a very thorough explanation of various methods. And if you want to waste your cousins money that's your business.

95, we only have 95 or 98 here

I used to use 93 but it's just a waste of money for 9.XX:1 cr so I use 87 from el cheap gas stations... lowest has been at 2.07/gal. here in SC... sux.

sorry, didnt mean to sound like a ass. but what i was getting at is, detonation doesnt always occur from compression; it can also come from hotspots and advanced timing. i said the bang thing because thats what usually happens during detonation; the whole air/fuel mixture just burns up real quickly in different areas; faster than usual(during combustion, air/fuel dont actually "explode", but spreads from the ignition point and moves out).

also the words may have been a little mixed up, but i was getting at higher octane fuels usually contain more additives. if you look on the gas companies website, youll see that in their high-grade fuels they add more stuff to it. etc: ...BP offers consumers three grades of quality Amoco gasolines-regular, midgrade (Silver) and premium (Ultimate)-that are all designed to meet the needs of the variety of gasoline-powered vehicles in the U.S.
Amoco Ultimate provides more cleaning power through a detergent additive than what is required to meet national or regional specifications. With twice the detergent additive level required by law, Ultimate provides higher levels of cleaning for critical engine parts including intake valves.
ref: http://subsites.bp.com/ultimate/us/default.asp
and here's one from Shell(i wont quote it because its pretty big for a post imo): http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=us-en&FC2=/us-en/html/iwgen/leftnavs/zzz_lhn3_3_0.html&FC3=/us-en/tailored/shell_for_motorists/fuels/optimax/optimax_about_ga_1602.html

Pauls81sc,

I'll admit that you seem to know what you're talkng about, and I'm about ready to switch back to 87 and save some money. I noticed that you have an 89 Si: what grade do you consistently run on that car? I've got a '91 with 88k, so response to fuel is going to be nearly identical. Also, have you ever calculated gas mileage with both premium and regular unleaded? I've tried to eye the difference, without much success. I keep hearing that premium gives you better mileage, though, and I just want to make sure I wouldn't be sacrificing mileage by switching to a lower octane. Thanks.

kven,

no apology necessary...

Right on with the links. I guess they do put more detergent in their "premium" fuels. Like I said before, never heard that. And don't get me wrong, I'm no internal combustion expert by any means. But I've had people that I highly trust, automotive people, tell me it's no better. (They even told me to avoid it when getting smog tests because you end up with more emissions.)

You're also right on the detonation thing. If you've got hot spots and are getting detonation, use the higher octane, it will prolong your engine life.

To Thepeug,

I live in California and have been driving CRX's since I drove my first one, brand new, off the lot in 1990. In 15 years I've gone over 250,000 miles in CRXs. Never put anyting in em but 87 so I couldnt tell you about mileage differences. It sounds like from your own experiences you havnt been able to tell a difference. I do put Chevron w/Techron gas in my car most of the time, and it does seem to run quieter (and maybe smoother) than economy gas like Arco.

I recommend, if you don't have any modifications to your car that require higher octane fuels, run some good 87 octane and see if you can tell the difference. No butt dynos, just how your mileage varies and how the car sounds.

FOOTNOTE: The owner's manual for my 81 Porsche 911SC (aka pauls81sc) recommends 87 octane and that's all I'll ever put in it.

~300 miles to a tank on 87 octane...

From personal experience, my d16 with high compression and advanced cam gear 2 degrees detonated at 80mph and was not pretty... and that was with 93 octane.

Stock 91 Crx Si, always use 87, and get about 360 miles on a tank of gas. Can't complain.

Hey Turtlecrxsi,

Out of curiosity, how high is your compression?

90% Nitro, can't afford full 100%, but it's not legal in NHRA anyway.

Hey Turtlecrxsi,

Not sure, maybe 9.3:1... not high... can't afford the risk with my commuter.

Btw, been getting around 360 miles to a tank with a couple gallons left to spare... not too bad.

On my stock D16A6 I ran 87 octane... And with the D15B VTEC, I also run 87 octane... Seems fine, no pinging or detonation... Performance is great!
