The other day I went to start and it backfired. When started again it reved way up then died. Did this several times. Managed to get home by feathering the pedal to keep the rpms up. Will run ok with r's up and a load such as running on hwy with OD off, then dies as soon as I go to idle such as a stop light. 2.0L VCT, 230K miles, Has about 30k on new timing belt and pulleys. Removed covers and belt is fine. Checked timing slots on back of cams, right were they should be with #1 at TDC. Any help were to go from here would be appriciated. I'll be trying the IAC next.

Thanks,
Newbie

I'd have the trouble codes checked, generic as well as manufacturer specfic. It may be something simple, but then again, it could be something a shop needs to look at? I did see a service bulletin about variable camshaft control timing, can cause low power--rough idle and or stall at idle. I'm not saying that is your problem, I don't know. They did list some trouble codes with that bulletin. When you get into no code diagnostics, the list of possibilities is about as long as your arm.

Would there be trouble codes stored even though the check engine light never went on?

Some of my generic info says yes it is possible. I can't speak for your exact vehicle.
