American Kelzilla headers

The car is back at Gary Jones from the fab shop where the headers were built. I had hoped a jig was built to help with follow work but that was not the case. Anyways I am very excited about the outcome. The next steps are to get the b-motor put back together and take the car to the exhaust shop to finish out that part of the project. The once the motor is done it and the exhaust system are headed to an engine dyno. Yea ha baby.

Eric please post the pictures I sent to you...cause I suck!

Lookin awesome. What diameter & length primaries? How is frame clearance?

Look forward to hearing how it goes on the dyno.

Primary lengths are between 35 and 36 inches. The diameter slips my mind. The engine and headers are headed to Atlanta to be dyno'd on Thursday...not sur when exactly it will get done...shop has lots of work. We are taking both the 650 and 750 carbs to make sure we fit the right one. I am very excited about seeing the results. I am also working on an A motor with very low hours...not gonna say more than that because the deal may not come through.

Frame clearance is great.

More to follow.

But I do have to think about a tranny. I am sure mine won't last too long even though I am way more gentle than eastman.:)

Awesome, enjoy the dyno day. Will be interested if you get much gain with 750. We tried this on the 5.0 and it didnt give us anything. May have been different on the 347 though.

I am also working on an "A" engine plan. Going to be overseas for a few months but have started planning. Will be interested to see what sort of combo you are working on.

Tom,

I told you those headers are junk you need to trash them and start over and tell me what can you put them in.

I see, I was wondering if you pulled the LS and went back to FMC.

Ok. So I have an issue that must be run to ground with the engine builder/dyno guy in atl. The engine only made 280 hp and about the same torque. Peak hp was at about 5600 and peak toque was at 4700. Those rpms are what expected to see. The issue is around compression I believe. Since I don't know the chamber size in the heads I am going to have them cc'd. I am showing 110 psi. The is way too low. I am going to have a long talk with then engine dyno guy (who was not the builder) on Monday to chart the way ahead. I believe I need to get all the numbers from the head and intake combo. Then I need to figure out what I should be getting.

More to follow...this sounds all too familiar on this forum.

Also....you know it is not good when the engine dyno guy uses alpo in the same sentence as your engine!

What are the came specs? I've seen bad cam timing or a cam with some overlap cause low compression and poor numbers...

I am trying to locate the cam card. Will let you know when I find it.

Tom, remind us what you combo is, heads (head flows would be useful but can probably find somewhere on the net), cam (duration at .050 and lift), intake. I will model for you if you like using Dyno 2000 software. This will predict hp & tq and at what rpm. I have found this to be a pretty accurate tool, say within 10 - 15hp (todate).

I use to build possible combo's prior to spending any money to make sure they will fit the required job. Also use to determine gearing requirements prior to getting to the track as well as calculating likely lap time reductions through engine upgrades (push power figures into an acceleration programme and then map this to the track).

Ok so I have an update. There is good news and bad news and little suspense.

Suspense: We took my motor after being rebuilt to an Atlanta engine shop with a dyno. This was with the free replacement crank from eagle. He tuned on it and could only get about 280 HP out of it. We have theories but we are not 100% sure about the bottom end. Some things are not adding up....besides the alpo style HP numbers. He is going to tear it apart and verify the components to ensure we know what the bottom end is really. The reason for this is because my accelerometer ala traqmate stated I was making about 290 hp (RWHP i think) at Sebring before the crank let go. So we think something is amiss.

Good news: There happened to be a very well built and nice 347 motor from a Gary Jones customer that was forsale that happened to be dyno'd using my Kelzilla's. The HP was 516@7200rpm. TQ was 418@5900. I am going to put a 6800 chip on it, at 6500 rpm it was making over 480hp. So I am getting this motor and it will be my "A" motor.

Bad news: I have no money and am selling newspapers on the street to support my addiction.

I will have more specifics on the A motor in the next day or so. Also the engine builder thinks he can get 430HP or so out my B motor with some work/cam/intake. Still keeping the max rpm at 6500 for it.

I will get some pics as soon as I can of the 'A' motor in the car with the headers.

Other upgrades happening to the car before road america in july: New Seat and a hydraulic clutch kit.

Here are dyno sheet numbers::runaround:
rpm/tq/hp
4200 367 294
4500 372 319
4800 388 354
5100 407 396
5400 412 424
5700 417 452
6000 415 474
6300 405 486
6700 389 497
7000 381 508
7300 370 514

Cheers from the PO house.

Tom, what are the specs for the new "A" motor? Power figures up to 5700 rpm look similarish to my current 347 but the torque is down. I am picking the engine is running an Edelbrock Victor Junior single plane manifold. What block/compression/cam/heads/inlet combination is the engine?

You will certainly notice the difference that 500+hp will make in your car :)

Enjoy, Kel.

The build sheet is on the way. Here is what I do know right now. Dart block, trickflow heads, victor Jr, barry grant carb... I will find out the rest in next few days and will update.
