I have a 1989 Lincoln Town car. While driving my car today I noticed that it was revving a lot before it shifted, and it didn't seem like it was shifting normally. I think it was shifting into second around 30 mph then it would drive normally until it got up to around 45 mph - then it would start revving again. I was thinking it could be a transmission problem. I tried checking my trans fluid (I think it is the dipstick with the black handle to the left of the engine - it has a reddish fluid inside) and it seemed full. What could be the problem.

How many miles on the transmission? The fluid should have the consistency of motor oil. Old and tired fluid can result in the symptoms you describe as well as just age of the transmission. Fortunately, the transmission in your car was manufactured by the millions and easily replaced. It isn't even a hard job with some knowledge and proper tools. It's the Ford AOD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_AOD_transmission); millions and millions made. If you're going to have the unit removed and serviced, you may as well replace it with a re-manufactured one with a warranty.

Are you saying it might just need a flush - or I am most likely to have to replace it?

If it were mine and replacing was less than $100 than having it rebuilt I would replace. If the trans has less than 100k it is worth repair; more than 200k, replace it.

It has about 180,000 miles on it. It's original (as far as I know). Do you know if the transmission has a modulator on it?

I would also advise Lucas Transmission Treatment. After the flush. I flush my trans every summer and put a bottle of Lucas in it every time.
