I'm getting a short when i turn the key to crank only. every other position is OK. i start the car with an ugly push button wired to the starter and key on, or if its a good fuse i can use my remote starter. it only pops the fuse in crank position. the fuse it pops is the crank signal, bcm, cluster. please help. I'm guessing i need an ignition switch or something in the steering column. i also get a flashing security light quite often. when this happens, the car wont start. so i reset the security by holding lock unlock on the factory remote until the horn sounds 3 times wait 5 minutes then try again.i sometimes have to do this several times

Welcome to AF.
What year and model Regal? Depending on the year(s) the ignition switch is a good possibility.

sorry bout the missing info im used to being on regalgs.org. it is a 2000 buick regal gs (supercharged). if i recall correctly there are two parts to the ignition (tumbler w/pigtail and the electrical component box) and i want to do this correctly. should i hope that the short is in the tumbler or is it just as difficult to replace. the security light kinda gets me. it happens with both the spare and the regular use key, so im gathering that that problem is in the ignition area also. do you know of any write-ups of the procedure?

The key cylinder/tumbler and ignition switch/harness are two separate parts.
See thread below for the ignition switch replacement procedure which is the same for Grand Prix or Regal.
