I have heard people say that what you are describing can be caused by the 2 crank position sensors and or cam position sensor. Much past that you would have to put it on a real shop computer to find out what is going wrong. Some shops don't charge to much to diagnose it for you.

sounds like a plugged fuel filter. If it's plugged for too long, it will likely take your fuel pump down. Also, the fuel pressure regulator may be bad. I guess it's fairly common for the fpr to go bad on these machines.

My 85 does a similar thingy. Sputters hesitates, then after a while its ok.
Where are the crankshaft sensors located?
I think i can check out or fix most minor problems, except I have the darness time finding the location of different parts.

Crank posisition sensors are down by the oil filter. One comes out no problem, the other is blocked by the AC line.:banghead: The cam sensor is really easy to get to. Passanger side, rear head. (See attached drawings)
Also I recently started having the hard starting problem. I pulled the vacuum line off of the fuel pressure regulator and it was wet with fuel. Got a new one from the parts store and no more problems.
:uhoh:Word to the wise, depressurize the fuel system before changing the regulator.

If I remember correctly it is under the car, drivers side, near back seat area. It is threaded on one side and a plastic clip on the other. Oh ya don't forget to depressurize the system before disconnecting. Fuel spray sucks !!!!!!!!!!!!
