Help plz Fuel Trim Malfunction

I have a 2000 Galant GTZ, I have a fuel trim malfunction ( Bank1), can some one explain what this means??? also I just tried to smog my car but failed, could this be a reason why?? the ppl said I had too much hydrocarbons, I need info plz, thank you

It depends on if it is rich or lean. What is the last thing you have done to the car?
