I have a 98 CVPI, 4.6L with a rod knock due to oil loss from a broken oil cooler line. What's the chances of replacing the conn rod bearings without pulling the motor for emergency repairs? The car was driven less than a mile between the initial hose break to shut down. I know it's not proper, but I need the car now until I can pull the heads on a 95 Lincoln 4.6.:crying:

Very little to no chance.
I would just replace the engine with one from a junkyard. Most people say they can be had in the $500-800 range for a good condition 2v 4.6. The work would be about the same since you have to lift the engine off of the mounts to drop the oil pan.
If you go the new engine route, get an 01 or later. They have the PI heads for improved performance. And make sure the front coolant crossover on the intake manifold is aluminum or just replace it with a new Ford Racing PI intake manifold. If you get a 2004 or later than you also avoid the problems with the timing chain guide and tensioners that are problematic on 00-03 4.6s.

Thank you for responding. I see you a lot on here and when I read your response I get the feeling of experience, so I'm going to take your advise. I only lack about 2", well, your right. That leaves me with 2ea 95 Lincoln's, one head job and I think the timing chains on the other, both 4.6L's civilian. You are right again. We have 2 wrecking yards in Barstow, they both want $ 600.00. I'll get one of those running and play with the PI later and let you know later what happens. Again, thanks for the advice, I'll take it ! I'm sure we'll run into each other again.
:sarcasm1: At least I have enough used parts for the 4.6L motors !!! Maybe I will just switch to Jeep ! I have one of those too !!!!
