Your thermo could be stuck closed. Or you could of blown a head gasket, check for white smoke out the exhaust, and a light sweet smell of coolant burning. Has your low coolant light ever come on? If no to the above pull your thermo out and put it in a pot of boilling water to see if it opens. Check you coolant level also. If your check guages light came on, sometimes the car needs time to cool off befor it will restart.

Also, check your oil level. If you're running really low, you're cooking your engine for no reason. Easy fix if it's just that...

Bro, Check your coolant level . Look for any oil in the coolant. If it is very low ? Check your oil level. If it real high ? You need to dran the oil. Good chance all the coolant is now in your oil pan . There is a good chance you blow a head gasket. Other then that ! Replace the thermostat.
When you say you was driving down the road . Was you in stop and go traffic ? It could be your fan isnt working.
Who long had you been driving before it over heated ? 5 to 10 mins. Your stat might be stuck. Try tapping on the stat to see if will unstick. You can also make sure your coolant is full. And start the car. After about 5 mins you should beable to see the coolant moving through the radator.
When driving a auto. You always have to be awear of what your gauges are showing you.
If you give us alittle more info about the car from the first time you started it that day. And what all went on all day. It would help alot.

overheating? no way
my 89 camaro had cooling problems, 1 thing went after the other. First it was the thermostat. Then the radiator had a small hole. After that the fan motor shorted out, taking the fan relay out with it. That was all in a 2 month period, then of course a new water pump. The only thing that hasnt been replaced on the cooling system is the damn over-flow tank:rolleyes: luckily I was close to home or work so I didnt over heat to bad
the car is for sale
