'89 Nissan pickup drive shaft

My brother in law has a '89 Nissan PU, 4 cylinder, automatic w/ 2-piece drive shaft. One joint on the front half is bad, his mechanic said it's not replaceable and the whole front shaft must be replaced as a unit. A local drive shaft shop didn't have a fix for it either and recommended the same.

Are there any fixes for this other than replacing the front half unit? I haven't even seen it as the truck is 250 miles away. I'm reporting the info here third party from him and the mechanic.

Nissan parts could not locate a new one. I did find a used one online through a parts network but it was kinda pricey. Anybody have a good used one?

Any info would be highly appreciated.
