The balancer on the engine im going to use has a differant balancer than the one on my old engine the bottom pulley will not work with the new engine .:banghead: The new engine is balanced internally can I just swap the balancers if the answer is no can you go into detail on how to determine what pulley I will need to work with the new balancer what kind of grease do people use on the part of the balancer that slides into the engine:confused:

Mr pbody please chime in I guess I have on my older pontiac 400 a to peice balancer and on the newer one a 1 peice is it ok to swap them out so the pulleys will work also can someone tell me what the torque spec would be? I also need the torque spec for the flywheel bolts the engine is a 1971 400:confused:

The "two-piece" balancer assembly was discontinued for the '68 models. They use a
6-bolt" flange for the pulleys. The later 1-piece unit has 4 bolts holding the pulleys.

The balancers themselves ARE "interchangeable" since the engines are internally balanced "at the front". There's a clearance issue trying to use the larger OD late-model where it "runs into" the timing "pointer" on the '67-older timing covers. '68 is a "one year only" as it uses the later balancer and the earlier ("8 bolt") water pump. The '69-newer timing cover/water pump ("11 bolt") assembly is considered the better one.

Watch your pulley gemoetry closely. This can be a real bag of worms regarding mixing eras of Pontiacs.

Mr Pbody , the engine im going to use is a 71 but somone must have changed the timing cover I think its called because it now uses an 8 hole water pump my old engine I beleive is a 67 it also has an 8 hole water pump so from everything I have read the balancers are interchangeable and should not be an issue because both pumps are 8 hole?? do you use permatex on the water pump gaskets ? a lot or just enogh to hold it in place (a few dabs) I purchased a flow kooler pump in the directions it says in some installs they reccommend 2 gaskets

As stated, the '67-older timing cover MUST use the smaller 2-piece balancer. Only the '68 cover will work with the 1-piece AND the 8-bolt pump.

Two gaskets are required with the '69-newer system as it has a "plate" between the pump and cover. The '68-older have the plates inside the cover.

I use no sealer on the Pontiac. If the flanges are clean and "flat", a paper gasket "Dry" seals better than any other method.
