Speedometer, Odometer, Cruise Nissan Altima 96

So recently I have noticed that my speedometer will sometimes drop to 0 for a short period of time and then jump back. Today, it actually dropped to 0 and stayed there until I finished my drive. When I started the car back up a few minutes later and took it out for a test drive, it stuck on 0 for maybe a minute then jumped up to where it should be and the odometer started moving again. When the speedometer is at 0, the cruise control doesn't seem to work. The transmission seems to be shifting fine and I am getting fine pickup on the engine. Any ideas what this could be? It seems to be happening more frequently, but I don't notice anything else happening (though I am getting worried that maybe this is a precursor to something worse).

I have the same exact problem. Took it to a shop when I was still ignorant and they said it was the speed sensor cable and repaired it. About 6 months later it started happening again. Suggestions: Check the speed sensor cable first, then the speed sensor itself. An DTC retrieval should yield a speed sensor error/malfunction. Good luck.
