I've seen the story of this garage with that giant elevator before. Let me see if I can find it.

Good spot btw - that probably is #072 unless someone else was just inspired by it? Putting the car in the corner like that doesn't bode well for it ever getting out of there to stretch its legs though. :(

Fixed the title for you. :)

Was looking back through the previous info I had on the car. One item was this brief article written shortly after Thomas' untimely death. I think the section in bold ties it all together if you read the article posted above.

Dec 6th, 2001-
High-tech entrepreneur Thomas Gonzales, who launched one of the Internet's brightest stars before the dot-com flameout, has died after a battle with cancer. He was 35.

Gonzales co-founded Commerce One Inc., a Pleasanton company that made software designed to allow businesses to buy and sell products online. He remained Commerce One's chief technology officer until earlier this year.

"He was very proud of what he had created, of what became Commerce One," said Mark Biestman, a company senior vice president who gave Gonzales one of his prized possessions, a black cape bearing a gold letter "f" for founder.

After the company went public in mid-1999, Commerce One's stock soared, reaching its peak closing price of $135.63 in early 2000. The stock plunged along with the Internet economy over the past year. The shares closed at $3.41 Thursday.

Gonzales' estate owns about 1 percent of the company, worth roughly $10 million.

Gonzales is survived by his father Tom Gonzales of Incline Village; his mother Betty Baker of Oroville; and two brothers, Joel Gonzales of Pleasant Hill and Bernie Baker Jr. of Oroville.

A quick Google search finds this article (http://www.realestatejournal.com/columnists/private/20050404-private.html) from 2005 about the potential sale of his estate in Incline Village. I'll quote the relevant section:

...and an oversize garage, geared to the car collector, which features an industrial elevator that can lift cars.

So it would appear the info we've had all along has been true. The family has retained the car and it is in storage in the Western USA. Looks like they still have his F50 too (front left in the 'covered' shot). Curiosity leaves me wondering when those duPont pictures may have been taken. There aren't any cars in the pictures that are newer than this article, so it does leave one to wonder.

A little extra research pays off. Here's a clip from the VH1 special with a very brief glimpse of #072:

VH1 - The Fabulous Life - Sierra Star (http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=16348239)

Seems the home may still be for sale, though no telling whether it may have changed hands sometime in these past 5 years. At an asking price of $60-65M there aren't going to be too many qualified buyers.

"Wow, I should go drive one of the two R8s I own," said Tom Gonzales, explaining that all of the cars in his expansive collection have zero miles on their odometers.

Well that's certainly disappointing. :(

Taken from here: Robb Report Car of the Year 2008: Jury of Your Peers (http://www.robbreport.com/Robb-Report-Car-of-the-Year-2008-Jury-of-Your-Peers.aspx)

From another article about his boat company 'Shadow Marine':

"Tom owns 400 cars, motor buses, RV’s, airplanes, helicopters and a submarine."

Wow! :yikes:

Hello Everyone my name is Jake from Atlanta Ga, I just want to let you know, i have been to Sierra Star and met with the current owner which is Tom Gonzales Sr. I was there in Novemeber 2010. I brokered 52 cars of his wonderful collection. The house was absolutely amazing. And as far as I know still for sale (currently @ 50 mil). He told me he was tired of traveling back and forth from Florida and was selling. Any questions let me know. I hope I have been of some help.

Oh, yeah. For the record. When we walked to the front door his main house,Tom says" I've owned that car for 4 yrs and just started driving it yesterday ". Speaking of a 2006 BMW M6 coupe.

There are too many hands on this car. One day, it is sold, another not. Service is made or not ?

Since the car was not started.

I assumed it was not already sold when it appeared at the Boca Raton Concours a couple of weeks back.

Sorry to drag this back up but a TV show here recently filmed a spot on Tom's amazing underground garage at the Sierra Star. Of course the F1 is no longer down there and neither is much of anything else, but it's still neat to watch I think.

cps42IRMGFE

Tom seems like a real nice gentleman during the interview and of course the elevator and garage are simply amazing when you think of the engineering involved.
