highway run ins...

i've had a few of these in the last week...

i'm not interested in hearing why highway racing isn't safe, i'm sure we all know the consequences...

now on to the story...

first, about a week ago, some guy in a late 80s camaro z28 is in front of me on the highway... we go around a curve that takes us from one freeway to a different one, with a 2 mile straight after the curve...
he comes around, speeds to about 75ish, and backs off, with me right behind him.
i speed up, move over, he speeds up, i'm at 85, and still in 4th gear. i step on it a bit more, redline fourth, shift into 5th at 110mph, and watch as the camaro starts to fall off. i hit 130 and coast, as i'm coming up on traffic... really quickly...

second story...

after work, i'm following a z3 3.0 on the freeway, it's busy, he's weaving in and out of traffic... i'm following behind, and we take a similar curve to a different freeway, where i get up next to him on the curve and pass him at 90ish, around the turn, but there's a car in front, so i slow and get behind him... now he's all mr. badass, so he starts flying more, but i'm right on him... we get into traffic for a bit, then when it opens up, i slide over 2 lanes, and it's open...
i put him in the rearview at 120ish...
i slow down, he flys past. surprise.

race 3...

i'm going on the freeway from the first story, with the long straight... some cheeseball in a new impala is moving fast, so i move faster. i'm moving slowly up to about 90, and he's moving faster. i leave it in 5th, and slowly catch and pass him at 110. still moving, he's a speck in my rear view now.

i get up in traffic, and he finally catches me, shadowing me through the traffic. i get to a spot where it opens up, i move over, he comes up and next to me. i shift down into 4th at 85, and let him step on it. i step on it and walk him. i'm past him at 90 and moving faster, taking it to 115 before i shut down, b/c he's so far back he can't see me...

not bad for the 3gen lude...

and before you question me, it's breathed on, heavily, and i'm not going to vouch for when these people decided to back off... it seems that alot of my highway runs end around 100ish, when the other guy backs off...

not me...

it's breathed on,

This may sound dumb, but I'm new to this... I take it this means turbo? How much boost are you running? Just out of curiousity, do you have dyno #s or E/Ts? Nice kills.

breathed on is kinda slang for modified...

it breaths better, but it's not turbo'd or fi.

to run down the list... it's an 89 lude si...

motor was rebuilt, new rings, rods, crank, seals...

head is ported/polished and milled to raise compression .5 to 9.5:1.

intake mani is polished and port matched to head...

dc header, custom intake, straight pipe, thermal r&d exh, cam gears adj'd for me...

that's about it...

:bloated:

*takes out pen and paper and scribbles mods down* You never told me about any of that!!!! Arg, that's at least 260-270hp worth of motor in that car.... I mean, I've still got cornering prowess but.....

*turns to Layla* Hon, you might need that Rover 4.0L sooner than I thought.

Oh, good kills by the way. :D

Flylwsi...Do you have 270hp all motor!!?? Or is he being overly-optimistic so he has a way of justifying the HUGE chunk of change he's going to drop on his V8 swap???:D

I concur!

i don't know what the hp is on it, but i think octagon is being a bit optimistic...

it's easier to buy a v8 that way...

the car had 130 hp stock, and i would assume that she has about 150 or so at the wheels...

it's not that amazing of a motor, but it makes power, and actually makes more tq than hp...

i'll dyno this summer... my 1/4 times aren't that great, but my acceleration in 2nd - 5th is pretty sick on the freeway...

i'm not sure about handling prowess...
i'm at the very least equal...

susp. mods...

eibach prokit 1.5" drop
tokico blues
cusco front strut brace
custom rear brace

16" rims with 205/45 sumitomo htrz 2 tires. much nicer/stickier than paradas i had...

keep in mind the size of the car...
only about 2700lbs.
wider than a civic or crx.
front and rear sway bars...
4 wheel independent suspension...

she's pretty sick in corners...

for octagon...

in those stories, the first and 3rd are from 77N to 490W to 90W...

the second story is 77N to 480W...
the big sweeper...

i past the z3 going 90 through the sweeper...

Hey, that's right around the Brookpark Road-Parma exit. I worked at the Mr. Hero near there.

Also, I goofed when I read the generation of 'Lude. I thought that was the bigger 2.0L. The one that's shared with the Integra, but that's newer Preludes, right?

And am I really that transparent in trying to justify a Rover 4.0L? Maybe if I start throwing challenges at Redneck then I'll really need it. :finger:

Nice suspension upgrades flylwsi, that thing must be pretty fun through some twisties.

I've been having problems adjusting to my new tires, the rear tire kinda feels like it floats through hard turns and doesnt like to stick one line. I guess I will just ride this one hard and go back to Bridgestones.

no lude shared motors with a teg...

the 3gen ludes had the b20a5, (Si dohc)

4gen had h23 and h22 (93+ for h22)

5gen had h22 only...

tegs ranged from 1.6 to 1.8 liter motors depending on year...

rsx has k20 motor... not the same as anything except civic si and type r...

the car is sick in the corners...
the rear comes out first, which is really fun...

and yeah, octagon, that's the curve by you... it's hella sick of you get the right slingshot, you're at 100 by the time you get to the merge with 480, right after the curve... then it's just flat out for a couple miles...

so much fun... I've been having problems adjusting to my new tires, the rear tire kinda feels like it floats through hard turns and doesnt like to stick one line. I guess I will just ride this one hard and go back to Bridgestones.

i've got some wicked negative camber, so the rear floats a bit if you're not getting hard into a corner...

just so you've got an idea, i'm:
-1.4 in the front
-1.8 in the back

so it's rough to ride, b/c she follows anything on the road in a straight line...

but it's sick in the corners... lotsa grip and she doesn't eat the inside of the tires like you'd think...

You got to be making more than 150hp all those modes and your telling me you only made 20hp, give your self some credit.

the car makes 130 crank hp stock.

that's about 100-110 whp.

which is what i said here, so i'll just clarify a bit more...
the car had 130 hp stock, and i would assume that she has about 150 or so at the wheels...

130 factory crank hp.

i'm assuming 150 whp now.

that means the orig. whp was 100-110 ish.
i'm assuming 150ish now...

get it?

u may be a bit on the underrated side if u beat a larger displacement z3 . . . i will say u are closer to 170-180 whp

(unless of course it was all taller gearing at work on ur side . . . which could be the case)

i'm not sure what to tell you, and i don't know that he tried as much as i did, but it just seems like most people let off at 100 ish, so i just keep going.

i don't know that i underestimated myself, and honestly, i hope i did...
but some of us are just better drivers, and it's possible he had an auto, i don't know...

but he didn't seem as eager as i am about flooring it around a curve, or disappearing into the horizon...

but he sure was driving like he was a bad mofo until i caught him... maybe he just shyed up when someone actually showed him up...

dunno

lol My brother was driving his Impala and after a night at Hooters watching wrestlemania we headed back up the interstate. A F body wanted to toy with us..... he was diong 140-150mph for 4 miles in a construction zone with some turns and traffic LOL..... that was a good ride....... that camaro got smoked....

His Impala Ss has following mods
Headers
K&N Cone Intake
no Cats
high Flow mufflers
275 wide tires.... different size and AR then stock ones...
1200? stall torque converter
Shift Kit

flylwsi
05-05-2003, 07:40 PM
a 1200 stall is nothing to brag about, so you may be off on that...

most converters are 2400 at least... especially in high hp rwd cars...

SR20DETpower

yeah I have no idea really, Ill have to ask em maybe it is 2000's... he works at a transmission shop so I know he has a good one.

I personally do not like driving cars with higher stall TQ, its a PITA to manuever around a parking lot or such at low speed. I know a guy with a old camaro with a 6800rpm stall TQ!!! lmfao in excess he runs 10.85 almost every run he does lol.....its one consistent car.

With a stall of a bout 2000-2600 you really wouldnt notice it down low. My friends got one in his'70 Z28 (2200stall) and it does just fine.

What year is your brothers Impala?

Yea, likewise with a 2800 even. A 3200 is perfectly driveable if you ask me. I've tried to introduce this fact to redneck before, but he insists on going with a wimpy little girly 2800 or something like that!!:D

flylwsi
05-06-2003, 01:30 PM
it depends on how much you drive the car...
my friend's 73 nova has a 3400 stall ATI convertor in it...

he doesn't drive it hard enough to warrant it, and he's paying for it, b/c it's not getting used to it's full ability...

granted, he's got 420hp in it... but he doesn't drive it nearly hard enough in my opinion...
