Gulf Orange

Can anyone clarify something for me, I think I have got is sorted out just need a second opinion.

On the 1995 Gilf cars there is the orange used on the wheels an as far as I can assertain a lighter orange used on the bodywork.

I think I have narrowed it down to two peugeot colours.

Burnt Orange for the wheels.
Formula Orange for the bodywork

Can anyone confirm or disprove this?

Additionaly got Peugeot Pulsar Blue for the bodywork also.

That just leaves the silver to identify, difficult as it seems very inconsistent in pictures.

Drawing conclusion on the colors by using (old) pictures taken in differing lighting conditions is not an easy task even alone, but differing materials on which the paint is applied and the possibly differing paint thicknesses makes it even harder.

The orange stripe on the body may seem lighter due its thickness as it is only a thin tape on the silver colored part of the body, so the silver background also reflects some of the light and makes the stripe appear lighter. On the other hand, the rims are covered with thick orange paint coat and so reflects much more the real color (and not any of the silver), and so it appears darker than the thin orange tape, even they were both the same color.

Also the material they are applied on may affect slightly the appearance of the color in different lighting, but part of it is due the roughness of the surface, how it absorbs or reflects the light. Same thin thickness of orange paint coat on a carbon fiber and on magnesium alloy may appear as two different shades of color in some type of lighting, and also in some other, as the same color. It all comes down to physics and the nature of light (waves) and how the receiver gets it, whether it's an eye or a camera (as well its physics and limitations, and many times also the limitations of the colors of the printing equipment as we talk of pictures from the 1990's, and later the scanners etc.).

I don't know did this help anything, but I wouldn't be so sure they used different colors for body and rims, at least on purpose. :dunno:

Hello carbuilder,

I can't help, just confirmed on #15R the wheels seem stronger but the material is different, so it explains maybe this fact ?

You plan to paint your future GTR Gulf colors..?

I agree with Doc, it's going to be hard taking references from pictures with shading and contrasting variances

Good luck though, what are you doing? :)

Tried contacting Gulf but all they could give me was a RAL number which I suspect it what they use on their logo, I am sure I have heard Burn Orange used before somewhere but it seems rather too red and the Ut models are not reliable because colours on a model are usually toned down anyway.
No its for my large scale model, unless I aquired an ex Gulf car I would not repaint it in a colour scheme it never wore.

Show us what you have made so far and I shall let you have the paint codes :smokin:

Give me time to do a photo shoot when I get some free time, just basically got the chassis done so far.

What I am looking for is a good representation of 1/6th scale carbon fibre, any ideas.

The finest carbon weave I,ve seen, was used by McLaren on the steering column tube and column stalk covers. It,s about 1mm wide strands in a satin weave.

Look forward to seeing your pics.

I bet that is nigh on impossible to source lol

Here's an example of what you are probably looking for:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9783

I've used some before and it has a pretty fine weave to it. 100mm wide is a limitation, but there must be other sources with larger pieces available.

If you look through the site that Erik has linked you too. They do 1K dry cloth as well. Just depends on the weave you are after, also dry cloth is difficult to cut and drape, plus fidely to keep in straight lines compared to prepeg.

You can see where I am comming from with two shades of orange if you enlarge pelotons footer and compare the stripe with the wheel.

Use www.imageshack.com (http://www.imageshack.com) its simple and free to use.

Yes, the 95 wheel colour is a RAL number and the tape line is from the 3M graphic sheet range. But there is a colour difference, as inks are used. Same goes for the Gulf logo.

BTW, the silver is actually "champagne"

Andy Bee should be able to confirm all this, as he did all the graphic design on the Gulf GTR,s.

Thanks Leman I was beginning to think I was going colour blind with all of the talk about atmospheric distortion etc.True distance does dull and lighten colours due to atmospheric intervention but instances of one colour at a similar distance to one another should still look the same colour.

If you look closely enough, the orange on the Gulf logo is a slightly different shade to the tape line. So you are after three shades of orange to be exact. But remember its a race car not a concours queen, so things are not going to match exactly.

West red and White is begining to look apealing, lot simpler

But West Red and White is boring. :uhoh:

As you undoubtedly know there's a lot of history and passion over the many Gulf liveries that have graced racing cars for all these decades. It's part of the reason why the 1996 Gulf GTR is my favorite of all the F1 liveries by a mile or so. If I were doing a recreation there is no doubt in my mind what the choice would be.

For your reference, here's the largest version I have of the image I am using as my signature now. I say go for it!

For sharing images on the forum - you need to have it uploaded somewhere on the web and access the file's URL by right-clicking on the image and selecting 'Properties'. Copy the full text of the URL from the http:// all the way to the very end, and place that text in between these Image tags:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/Peloton25/Smilies/img.gif

If you don't want to type out the Image tags each time, there's a button above the box where you type your posts that looks like this: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/editor/insertimage.gif

That brings up a small script window where you can paste in the image's URL and it will automatically apply the Image tags for you.

Sites like Imageshack.us that Le Man mentioned, or Photobucket.com or TinyPic.com make it easier than that by offering you the text you need to embed the image already pre-formatted with the Image tags surrounding the URL when you upload the file. Make a few attempts and you should get the hang of it quite quickly.

This forum has also re-enabled the Attachment function. When formatting your posts, if you scroll down to the options section you will see:

Attach Files
Valid file extensions: bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg pdf png psd txt zip
[ Manage Attachments ]

Click on the button which will open a smaller pop-up window. Then use the 'Browse' buttons to navigate to the location you have the image stored on your PC. Once you have selected the number of images you wish to attach, you have to click the "Upload" button on the right side before closing that pop-up window.

Keep in mind that there is a file size limitation of 100KB maximum for all attached files, so if you have something larger than that you'll need to instead use one of the external websites that has been mentioned.
