4 Wheel Drive is only supposed to be used on wet terrain or conditions that call for it such as mud, snow, offroading/rockcrawling, and stuff like that. What you're feeling is the drag of the 4x4 system. Using 4x4 on a dry paved road isn't the normal application for it and the tires are firmly planted on the road with a frim grip causing no free spin from the tires. Kinda like rolling a ball in water and then on the ground. The water being mud/snow, the ball turns easier, where as the ground represents the road, and gives more resistance. Doing this on a normal basis puts way more stress on the differentials, universals, and the internals of the differentials and transmission. This can cause major unnecessary wear and tear on these parts causing premature breakdown which will get expensive to fix.

Sound normal for dry pavement type conditions. Don't run it this way or you'll tear it up.
