I just bought a 1979 Chevy pickup. It has a 350 in it but the transmission is not right...The previous owner had lowered it and put a transmission from a 1948 chevy car...not sure what kind of car though..What I really need to know is what kind of transmission will fit in it right or can i repair the trany that is in it to fit up right...Could use the help...One more thing doesn't a 3 on the tree mean stick or does it mean automatic?

a 3 on the tree mean

Yes 3 speed standard with shifter on stering column.

Does it have a std or auto transmission now?
What is not right on transmission?
Are you looking to put a auto or std stick or floor shift back in it?
The 350 engine bolt pattern should fit all older or newer GM V8 engines.

It has a std transmission in it now...The man i bought it from said that the linkage didn't quite line up right...Well beings its standard im gonna leave it that way..Will a 350 trans & 203 case or a turbo 400 & 203 case fit in it?

Than why are you asking about automatics?
Not unless it is already a 4W.
4W and 2W transmissions are different.
If a good standard already in it.
Why not just fix you linkage?

The reason i asked about automatics is because i didnt know 3 on the tree come in that year of trucks...The man wasn't real spacific about the 3 on the tree...fixing the linkage would be fine but I wasn't sure if you could if it didnt line up quite right...is there a kit i need to buy on top of buying the linkage?

Column shifters a bad about wearing on shifting arms at bottom of column.
But most can be adjusted up tighter and shifting linkage rodes centered.

See if you can adjust it up.

Let us know how it goes.

Back when I was kid we always change the 3 on tree shifters over to a good hurst floor shifter with dual glass packs.
Good fast shifts and you could bark tires in second and even 3 gear if you had a hot V8.
