automatic tranny question

Hi,
My 97 K1500 developed a strange thing yesterday.
When you shift into drive from neutral it seems normal with one clunk.
But from reverse to drive, it has a double clunk like taking up some play.
Same from drive to reverse.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for any help,
Bob B

First check the driveshaft u-joints by chocking the front wheels, jacking up the rear and trying to rotate the shaft. There should be zero play at the joints.

Then check the tranny fluid for proper level and quality. If it is old, very low, looks opaque brown, or smells burned it needs to be changed. Better would be to change it and the filter, run 50-100 miles, then change the fluid again (leave the filter) to get out more of the old, bad stuff. DO NOT HAVE A POWER FLUSH DONE. A good fluid change smooths out shifts considerably.

Hope this helps!

Other than the clunking during engagement, how is the transmission performing?? Does it shift out ok?? Does reverse work??
