spark plug change

i need to change the plugs on my 96 voyager. any good advice on how to get to them? my garage wants $300 to change them and i wont pay that.

Which engine? I have done it on a 95 with 3.3 engine and removed the plenium to get ot rear plugs. (Install new gasket when doing this ). Do a search using "spark plug change" and you will get many threads on the subject. Some do from bottom.

If you remove the plenium you may want to change the valve cover gaskets at the same time.

ON MY 97 GC with a 3.3 I get the rear plugs from underneath..using a 30 inch or so extentsion bar on a 3/8th ratchet. Do it as much by feel as actually being able to see the plugs. I have not removed the plenuum...seems like that would involve a lot more disasembly than it's worth..If this is a 1st time change..I would suggest spraying some WD40 or PB blaster into the recesses that the plugs sit in and letting it work for 30 minutes or so.. Be sure to use anti-sieze on the new plugs.

I think you'll be in for a heap of frustration if you go from underneath. I changed mine removing the plenum and the wiper tub. The everything is within easy reach. At first I was a little intimidated taking the tub off but I soon found it was very easy and quick. I had it done in a couple hours. While you're there you may want to change the O2 sensor.

easiest way is to take bracket bolts holding the intake , swing it away up then you have enough space to take 4 & 6, then for # 2 , just take bolts holding alternator then swing it away .. i do it within 1 hr.

I did my 2000 3.3 from underneath, as I didn't want to mess with the EGR, etc. attached to the plenum. It was more difficult than my 94 3.8 or 90 3.3. In retrospect, it might have been better from up top.

Just did my 1997 T & C LX a few months ago. I have an All Wheel Drive and I just couldnt reach anything from below.

It is easy to pull the plenum and I probably shouldnt have bothered buying the gasket kit as it looked like the original could have been reused.

I pulled the Wiper box (easier than it looks), unbolted the alternator mount and pulled the upper plenum.

Please do yourself a favor and do the Oxygen Sensor while there. You can get one from Ebay for about 30. I must have messed up the old one and had to do it a week later. I was able to change the sensor out after but it required 3 different sized externsion to get it just right and I got lucky with how force force was needed. It cam off pretty easy.

Also while there I put in new Valve cover gaskets. The originals were pretty bad.

I've never done it. My engines don't stay in long enough to need new plugs ;-) But be very careful about cross threading the one under the alternator. I've rebuilt a number of these engines recently, and way more than half have this plug crossthreaded.

Just my two cents . . .

Good observation, I can see how easy it would be to do that. I am looking at doing the belt and maybe the tensioner in a few weeks. Not a big problem right now just a maintenance thing. I will pull the alternator out of the way again and double check. Thanks
